Riding in to work today, as I get into Maidstone and filter through the stationary traffic at a set of traffic lights, I pull up next to this blinged up Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I didn't think much of it. The guy wasn't revving his engine or anything, and I was just leaving the bike at idle.

Anyhow lights go green, and I pull off and this Jeep launches like nothing else! No revs, no warning that he's gonna pull off so fast. Anyhow, with the bike engine I dont have any 'real' power until about 9k so even thuogh I've got it full open in 1st he flies past me.

Once I was up to 9k and the bike really got going I started pulling back, but I eased off as a set of lights ahead of me went red. I noticed he wasn't going to stop so I gave it a bit more. ( :o ) I gained position back level with him, but these were only 30mph roads so I didn't want to do too much. He pulled into a different direction lane at the next set of lights ahead of me. Was some old bloke. The car had trade plates on so I guess it was out for a test drive. :p

Anyhow, I've just looked it up. Check those stats! Very impressive vehicle, certainly one for the gangsta rappas styling wise though.

You should feel ashamed, (a) for getting involved in a drag race on public roads (cos no one else does guv), and (b) for losing to anything other than an F1 car whilst on a decent bike.

Thing is, I had no idea he was going to launch, so I was just pulling off normal commuter style. :o

I suppose thats the benefit of having a vehicle with bags of torque. You can pull off without letting anyone know what you're about to do. If I want to pull off fast on the bike, or even my car, I have to get the revs up ready and drop the clutch.

GSXR600. All the power is at the top end. I wasn't expecting it, and didn't have the revs up ready. Thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it. :p

its understandable though, With that vehicle with all that torque low down in the rev range. I bet if you got the revs high that Jeep would have no chance!

Have you read the review and specs on the jeep?

Yep, and loved it!
When I test drove the new 5.7ltr Hemi, even I was shocked at its performance. My 4.7ltr was rapid enough (0-60 7.36 Gmeter).
It was going to be my next car, but I had a Mid Life Crisis, and bought a Scooby instead.

edit: just noticed it was the SRT8 engined one... damn I want one now

plus, its raining down my way, so if that was a factor for you too you can pretend you were playing it safe!

To be honest, loosing to a Jeep like that is no big thing. I know of quite a few tuned motors that can keep up with bikes until the bike really gets going (like 9/10k rpm).

I've just put a micron can on my CBR600 - sounds glorious on the open road but has stopped me from launching as quickly off the lights in a built up area - anything above 4000 rpm and it sounds like a wailing banshee lol.

Still quick enough to leave most things standing at the lights, but I'd have definitely stuggled against that jeep too.

My mates BMW1200GS would have no problem though - awesome torque low down.

nah, just clutch it up to about 7-8 (on my R6) and your at 60 a whisker over 3 seconds. Have that jeep!! The mid range isn't too bad (for a 600) on my R6, much better than my mates GSXR, but thats not what 600's are about really is it!!
16000rpm all the way!
I could have done him in my corsa 1.2 8valve , the £150 passion wagon just got a new head gasket water pump and cambelt it really shifts, 0-60 must be down to about 16 seconds!! I think I might treat it to a power resistor of justice!

haha, true, but if I get the bike up to 8K in town it starts setting car alarms off and makes babies ears bleed
