I have Shure E4C (now replaced in the Shure line by the SE310) earphones, which, though now old, somewhat colour what I consider quality sounding earphones.

totally agree, I had some Shure earphones, now have a pair of Klipsch Image earphones, you can get some seriously good earphones if your willing to pay for them.
