Is it still the case that a dedicated card is still far better than onboard (Realtek ALC883 in this case) for gaming as I'm upgrading one of the kids's systems and have an old Audigy knocking about but PCI slots are limited
I suppose it depends how old it is and what model, but I would think the Audigy would be distinctly better.....I recently bought a new motherboard with the Realtek ALC889A codec, however as I had an Audigy 2ZS, I fitted it, as it was quite clear which would give better sound...
the recent realteks are not that bad (the ALC883 is quite recent I think), but the audigy isn't bad either. I'd say put the card in if you have the space, because atleast you have EAX support.
