Onboard sound detrimental to perforamnce?

Is that the case these days or are the onboard chips capable of dealing with everything themselves? I'm going to upgrade in the new year and was wondering whether it's worth getting a separate soundcard or not.

anything that isnt an x-fi is detrimental, basically. how detrimental is negligable in the age of quad cores and bitchin' fast 3d cards lol. however, if your a gamer, the x-fi's area worthy, if sometimes frustrating, purchace.
