I have tried to bring more detail into the dark areas of fur but always loose detail in the white fur of the face, any tips? Sadly as to my noob skills was taken on auto :(

wow, what a cool dude :D

That is, unfortunately, a nightmare exposure. Here you've pushed it about as far as you can go without burning too much of the face.
You could bring out the shadows (and just the shadows) some in post processing, that's always an option.

Best "solution" though would be to just keep shooting, try to get the light more on the darker fur - it really doesn't help that the light face is illuminated while the dark fur is in shadow.

its a hard shot to get more detail from without destroying the quality

heres a quick attempt , i basically duped the image, adjusted exposure slightly, then i overlayed a layer and used some masking to blend the 2 exposures , then it was a case of adjusting levels to suit, without killing the photo - after that it was noise reduction + sharpening
