One lens - prime

I only have a 24L (and a 50mm I never use) for my 30D.

Right, so, out of every available prime, you would choose the 24L? It's a good choice, but as the OP states you can choose ANY prime (it doesn't have to be one you own) and this prime you would take away with you for a year. It's all hypothetical, but an interesting one for me, nontheless.

im with olv for a 1.6 crop sensor i find 24mm ideal on my 40d. Its a good compromise focal length for landscapes and general use. Any wider and you get to much distortion in portraits and longer limits indoor possibilities. If i want to go wider i stitch shots as required. On ff i would choose the 35mm.

on a 35mm range finder I'd always look for a 43mm (near enough the diagonal on a 35mm negative.) Still don't really understand why the SLR world went 50mm crazy. So for me on my crop body I'd go with a 28mm f1.8 as that gives me about 44mm equivalent which I currently have with my 28mm f2.8. Full frame would be tricky toss up bettween a 50mm f1.4 and the 35 f2.

Actually, I have a 28mm f2.8 FD lens on my NEX-3 and it's a really good FL. Shame sony aren't getting their arses into gear with the e mount lenses!
