when ever my computer reboots i get a screen saying "one of your disks needs to be checked for consistancy"

i have 10 seconds to skip by pressing any key, however this doesnt work. Sometimes the computer boots in to windows, some times it hangs/gets stuck at 1 second in the count down timer.

why could this be happening? Its a solid state hard drive with windows 7.

Seen this message a lot. Not normally anything to worry about, it runs through then all is fine. If it fails to complete the check/does it every boot that's a bigger issue
 
sorry should have explaiine... it doesnt go on to actually do the check, it just boots in to windows (when it doesnt hang at 1 second)
 
Ah. Can you put the disk in another computer and run chkdsk on it there? Or boot from a different disk in the same computer?

Checking to see if the disk has failed is straightforward enough but can take quite a long time, and your data will be far gone by the end.

It's probably windows corruption. The system is running at stock/with an entirely stable overclock? Failing that the ssd could be on the way out, but you'd be unlucky if this is the case. Past that more obscure things like the sata controller on the motherboard giving up are possible.

I *think* a reformat and reinstall will solve the problem, and hope you have your data backed up :)
 
i am writing this post from the computer. its a dell studio xps 16 laptop. everything works/runs 100% inside of windows. I get 200m/s read in hdtune.

i could take the drive out and run check disk i suppose but dont have another pc handy.

i'll give it a go.

just running it through HD tune error checking, so far nothing.

also hdtune status is set as OK - no problems
 
Running checkdisk manually is surely going to do the same thing it's already doing?
HD tune is doing a nondestructive test, so it's inherently unreliable. Its a good idea to run it though.

Unfortunate that you don't have another machine nearby. How do you feel about backup and reinstall?

It'll either a/ fix it or b/fail partway through, helping diagnosis but making the machine less usable
 
i duno why, but there is a 39mb partion which says oem partition:

i cant delete it or do anything with the partions using windows as it says i need to run chk disk. the 14gb unallocated was the recovery partion which i deleted.

anyone know good free partitioning software?
 
jon i dont mind doing a backup and format, however i have litterally only had the computer a week and got it set up perfectly. it takes me about 8 hours worth of messing to get it set up properly as its a development laptop so lots of settings.
 
Yeah. You want gparted on a cd, or using an ubuntu livecd which has gparted included when you choose 'try ubuntu with no change to my computer'. It is unwise to resize a damaged partition, and as windows thinks its damaged it probably is.

The bit at the start is an oddity of windows I believe, I don't know why its done that. Deleting the recovery partition is looking a bit daft at the moment, as you haven't used the space freed up and now is exactly when you would like to be able to restore to factory settings. If you resize the current partition to fill the drive, windows will respond by running chkdsk. If you're lucky, it'll complete and all will be well.

Moving the data will take longer than reinstalling windows. Also, if you stop it partway through this action your data will be very difficult to recover and windows will not boot. Oh, don't kill the partition at the start either, since neither of us know what it is.

I think wipe the drive and start over is the way to go.
 
i deleted the recovery partion because its not required. i never use dell standard installs.

i deleted it because i thought that the 39 mb partion might be causing the problem so was going to delete and extend the unused space.

how long does a chkdisk generally take to complete? might it be actually doing the chk when i think its frozen? should i try leaving it on that screen for a little while to see if it completes?
 
Hardware dependent. It normally shows something happening on the screen, but its worth leaving it for 20 minutes or so just in case.

Whenever you do any resizing to partitions windows tends to check them for consistency, and making the 39mb partition much larger wouldn't have helped. If you don't know what something is, it's normally best to leave it alone. Sounds patronizing but it's good advice which I wish I followed more often.

Not required perhaps, but still more useful than unallocated space. I can't help wondering if deleting it is what caused windows to become confused in the first place. I think you've basically just been unlucky though
 
no this started a couple days ago. i am just trying things to fix by any means, before having to reformat.

its not like i have anything to lose.
 
Fair enough, Id feel the same way. I hope you've made a backup though.

if you image the hard drive onto an external one, you can then mess about with gparted and moving things around to your hearts content, and if it goes wrong image back onto the laptop. Otherwise at some point you may find the entire drive is unreadable and the partition table is gone, forcing you towards a reinstall.
