Onion fingers

I was chopping onions on Saturday afternoon for quite a while. Normally the onion smell goes away from my fingers after washing them a few times but this time it stayed and it's stronger than ever. It's still there and it stinks.
I went out on Saturday night and managed to bring someone back. The moment was kind of killed when in the throws of it all she said, "Your fingers smell like onions".

Here I am two days later with really stinky fingers. It's really annoying me. I've tried scrubbing my fingers with various soaps, kitchen cleaner, washing powder, methylated spirits and even a little drop of toilet duck. Nothing works. I hate onions now.

Please help me :o

No joy I'm afraid, just a lemony onion smell now. Any other solutions?

Hmm odd! I usually use Jif lemon juice and rub it on my hands, usually gets rid of oniony or garlic smells.

Freefaller should know about onions, where is he?

rub your hands pretty hard on something stainless steel whilst running them under a cold tap - 30 seconds to about a minute should do.

i'm not just making you do retarded things, give this a go.

Toothpaste and COLD water.

It is a mild abrasive and the cold water closes the pores....

The alternative is to wash your hands with a stainless steel pan or something with cold water... soap them up with cold water then run them continually over the pot or a knife or something... anything as long as it is stainless steel.

From somewhere in the darkest recesses of my mind I'm receiving the message 'parsley'. I think that's to get rid of garlic breath though. Stupid mind.

there was a soap that used to be sold by Avon for getting rid of smelly onion hands. Probably won't help you though as you probably haven't got two weeks to wait for delivery. Have you tried soaking your hands in bowl of warm lemony water? Should reduce the smell somewhat, though I find lemon more offensive than onion! :D

Not sure if this works but found it on t'interweb

Subject: STINKY HANDS. I was reading about those smelly hands and all you have to do to get the onion smell off after you get through cutting is use a drop or two of dishwashing liquid and a little salt and rub for just a bit and rinse. Also if you are cutting an onion and bell pepper, cut the onion first then the bell pepper and rub your hands just a little with the pepper and no need to do anything the pepper does the trick. For shrimp smell use a little lemon juice and a little salt and rub and rinse.

I've just tried rubbing my hands in salt against the stainless steel sink whilst runnig cold water over them. It's reduced it very slightly but they still stink.

I want to try bleach but something tells me that its not good to get that in contact with your skin.

I have lots of spirits, whiskey, vodka, rum and even 3 bottles of Buckfast. Would any of that work?

Theres some industrial soap stuff , would shift it and no doubt a layer of skin. Name sounds like Tarmac but forgotten the name :(

Neck the lot you will forget the smell of onion and be overwhelmed by the smell of booze.

i'd rather have onion hands than lose the precious drink :p

if lighter fluid/meths doesnt work then 40% alcohol isnt likely to do anything. not sure on the best method now, how about marinating your hands in something that smells nice for a few hours... lol.

ive washed my hands with bleach before, but that was more of a "clean them in my mind" thing and bleach was the best thing that came to mind lol. it only really starts to burn if you leave it there!

No no, don't use salt.

Cold water + stainless steel for the win. I did it yesterday, but right after I admit.

Toothpase and cold water - try that

lol@Scuzi.

A couple of weeks ago me and my friends were preparing a home made chinese which involved spring onions and..GARLIC. The smell was on my hands for about a week.

I tried everything, washing and scrubbing with normal soap, lemon juice and salt copius amounts of times, and also some of my mum's hand cream :o Nothing would shift it.

After a week or so it just left naturally :p
