Okies, I got this system yesterday, currently wired up as follows:

Xbox 360 - Optical set to pro logic 2
PC - AUX set to pro logic 2

Now, this is the first time with a proper sound system so the settings are very daunting lol. My question is, how do I get 5.1 from my sound card which is a xfi elite pro. I was hoping to run optical from the i/o console that comes with the sound card, but my i/o console is broken.

On the back of the card, there are just standard 2.1mm, 4 in total, one for mic, and the rest are the usual front, sub and surround connections... what cables do I need to get that into the amp?

2.1mm? Don't you mean 3.5mm?

Well if your I/O console is bust, then that's digital connection down the drainpipe. Only way is to connect via the analogue connections assuming the Onkyo has 5.1 analogue input.

I don't know if that version of the X-Fi has a flexi jack. The Xtreme Music I have, which the rear looks very similar to yours, has a jack which doubles as a digital out and microphone in jack. A small I/O module which is bought separately then allows me to connect optical or coaxial. If your card has this type of jack, you might be able to get one of these modules, although they are not easy to find outside the popular auction site, that is assuming the Onkyo does not have analogue 5.1 in.

That's what I use to connect digitally to my X-Fi.

The amp does not have any analogue inputs, only the one on the front which is what I'm using atm and only allows 2.1.

Do you mean the little adapters that go on the end of the optical cable? They came with the cables I bought...

I shall do some googling :)

Right, enabled the digital I/O, used the plug adapter thing to allow me to plug the optical cable into the flexijack (3.5mm as you said, my mistake before :)).

Yet, I am still getting nothing out of the card... I will try a restart. But am stumped at how this all works lol.

No you wouldn't. You need the thing in the picture. It will only accept digital connection with one of those. This is where I have more time for Asus compared to Creative. Asus has a similar 3.5mm jack on their Xonar's, but they have it so you connect a little adaptor onto the optical cable, which they provide (adaptor) and connect it to the card. Creative however go and force people with no optical built into their cards to buy, if they can find one, one of those modules. And that's assuming the card in question even supports it.

Without that module thing, or a new console for your card, you are pretty much stuffed tbh. :(

If you do decide to go searching for one, try the popular auction site.Creative I/O Module they are called. Your card will support it, all X-Fi do. Only the low profile Xtreme Audio I would question.

Well, at work, I nicked a old psu from a to be chucked machine, snipped off the 4 pin wire connector to extend my psu's 4 pin to reach my card... Only just remembered I have to plug that in to give my I/O console power which has a optical (infra red) connection as the one on the xfi has a digital optical, not infra red which my amp does not recognise...

So, stupid ol' me :D
