Only person excited for Windows 8?

Like Theheyes, I can't really say I am excited about using Windows 8 as a desktop operating system because I am already using it and have been for a while. Though, what I am getting excited about is the launch of the entire line of Windows 8 based devices, such as Microsoft Surface and the Nokia Lumia 920. :)

Yep - I'm planning on replacing the iPhone with a 920.

Hopefully that will keep me distracted long enough to not impulse buy a SurfaceRT. I think the Surface Pro would suit me better since I already have an iPad. It's difficult to justify having two 'dumb' tablets.

Why would you do that, you'll miss the introductory price.
You should at least pay the money and download teh file, even if you don't use it for a few months.

Valid point!

Can you get a full licence on those deals, or upgrade only? Since leaving Uni I no longer have access to my Win7 key :/ My windows 7 is still activated but I cant get the key to reactivate!

Edit: Just found it in a txt file. Clearly past me wasn't as short sighted as present me!

Where do I get it? XD

It's going to be awesome for HTPCs as the whole start screen can be navigated with a remote. Should mean a lot more apps are easily accessed without having to dig out a mouse and keyboard.

WMC is to all intents and purposes identical to Windows 7.

Yeah I guess if you use a traditional remote it would improve things a lot (I use a mouse). I thought media centre was completely different?

Yep, but as we discussed before, what you want (going to a desktop to view nice images) isn't what I'd consider normal for a dedicated HTPC, where it goes straight into a media front end.

No the WMC (at least in previews) is pretty much identical, there's a few differences in the add-ins and obviously version numbers, but other than that looks and works the same.

I would have liked them to have dumped WMC and spent some time replicating the WMC functions as separate Windows 8 apps, but it's not happened. Might be pleasantly surprised, but doubt it, come the end of Oct.

Microsoft will have to sell it every where, at the same time to everyone at a competitive price if they're wanting it to be a big hit as they're predicting. Apparently they'll have over 3m ready for launch.

MW

Can't recall which feed I read it on, but MS are saying it will only be available in their stores/pop-up stores in the USA.

And whilst it's listed on the non-USA MS sites there was doubt over whether this was just a generic listing from the US site or whether it would be available in stores or online over here.

I'd like to know, as it doesn't sound promising at the moment.

dumb? lol

Yes, dumb like the client/server model (but not literally the same before anybody gets pedantic)

Nexus/iPad/WinRT tablets, for me, fall into the range of devices at the low end of the category with the 7" tablets at the bottom and WinRT devices at the top. They are powerful "enough", have limited on-board storage and are primarily consumption-oriented gateways to the cloud.

The Win8 Pro tablets on the other hand are significantly more powerful in that you could quite easily run desktop-class applications like Photoshop or Sony Vegas. Of course, at the moment you sacrifice size/weight/heat/battery but these new tablets are more powerful than my PC from a few years ago.

I'm not planning on getting it. I like Aero Glass and refuse to let Metro anywhere near my PC - which isn't a tablet, dammit!

Although if you tell Glaucus you're a win8 convert, he'll probably give you a reach-around or something :D

I think people are just connecting the dots and since MS aren't giving us many dots the connections are quite broad.

There will definitely be limited availability at first - either actual or manufactured - to maximize on whatever hysteria is around the Surface. People do actually want one so getting them queuing at pop-up stores on launch day shouldn't be a problem if they play their cards right.

Worldwide pre-orders will probably start the following Monday shipped in time for Christmas.

True, i guess it's because I use web browser etc, if i literally only used media centre windows 8 would make much more sense

Use the metro webbroser?

Metro by itself makes so much sense as a hTPc front end, without the need for WMC anyway.

I'm hopping somone will put it on a pc on a stick. Or at least release a hacked version I can install myself on an android device. Although I hate pussying about with things like that, so hope someone just makes a device for mass sale.

I have too many addins on WMC to ditch it tbh, the metro interface would also be much worse for IR on my plasma, (and its ugly! :p )
Web browsers is something i am looking at atm actually
