Currently with Virgin Media (ex NTL) 4MB Cable.

Happy with the connection and service, although was just wondering if I would see any speed improvement if I swapped my DNS over to OpenDNS.

Any opinions on this?

Probably not. Virgins dns servers will be fewer hops and therefore should be faster lookups. Also they have a big enough user-base to give a decent-sized cache.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was thinking, I just got 'wooed' by the flashy OpenDNS website :)

Also, like the idea of the anti-phising and spam filtering built into the OpenDNS.

using open dns here on virgin noticed no speed difference and it informs me a few times of dodgy websites

I'm inclined to say that a DNS service should return the IP of a domain when asked for it. Filtering is not the job of a DNS provider, the same way deleting (possible) spam is not the business of my ISP.

I've tried both and i have to say personally i find the Virgin DNS servers to be a tad faster (there certainly not slower) personally i would stick with them.

I think it depends if VM are having issues with their DNS servers as they have done previously (at least for myself). The OpenDNS servers spead up the browsing quite a bit for me when the 20 Mb upgrades were started, for example.

Yeah deffinatly, on that note i recommend people take note of the IP's of their DNS servers. They've come in handy for me in the past when its looked like my net is dead but infact its just VM dns gone bottoms up

I use Virgin Media and as soon as I switched to them I found that the internet was horrifically slow to the point that I sometimes couldn't use it for periods of 10 minutes or so. I changed my routers settings to point to OpenDNS instead and noticed an instant improvement. As of yet I haven't looked back :)

use opendns at work as we have a few differant isps and it all works okay.

Is it normal now for isps to stop other people accessing there dns servers? we used to use BT's DNS servers
