Hello All,

Hopefully a quick and simple question.... I've just replaced a hardrive and reinstalled Windows as the existing Hardrive seemed to be clicking a bit.

I've now ordered a USB adapter so I can connect the original hardrive up and drag off some files I forgot about. Will I also be able to open up the old windows recycle bin whilst it's mounted as a external drive? If so how?

The old harddrive is running Vista, and I can connect it up to either Vista or Windows7 to retrieve the files.

Thanks, Russ

I think by default the recycle bin is in the root of C:

To see it you'll probably have to show hidden folders and protected operating system files.

Not too sure if you'll be able to recover from it though I'm afraid.

I think the only way to do this is to piggyback the drive onto another machine with the same OS.

Piggyback, as in, install as a second harddisk in an existing Vista set? This isn't possible with my set up unfortunately as they're all laptops with 1 drive bay. The only way to connect this disk is via the SATA --> USB adapter.

If it's not possible then hopefully I can recover the files using recuva or someting like that

why would someone store files in recycle bin, lol

if you set windows to show system and protected files, I think it'll show up in X:\recycler\ or X:\recycled\

I was a bit over eager with my clearing down of files :/

Managed to get them off of the root drive of the mounted hard drive, under recycled. Needed to show hidden and protected files and then assign ownership to a new user on the new windows install to be able to access.

There was then a few sub folders with random names which I had to add myself to the security to be able to access.

One thing to note, once I had accessed the folder once, if I tried to go back it had changed and opened the Recycle Bin on the new O/S. Lucky I copied all the files out before closing it down the first time.

Thanks for the help guys :)
