Openreach Symmetric 1Gbps/1Gbps from April 2025

Hilarious, although I'm sure it's a more reliable service with better support, Virgin offer 2gig symmetrical for about a third of the price. Then you obviously have the other altnets.

Openreach are no doubt pitching it for areas where VM and alt-nets are not an option. It's all well and good saying I can get 2500/2500 for £cheap without considering that the provider has an extremely small footprint compared to OR.

I dunno, their product also sounds quite limited in terms of availability:

The availability of the new symmetric Gigabit full fibre GEA-FTTP product will be limited to areas where Openreach has delivered subsidised premises by a BDUK Type C contract. Some of the areas include Mid Devon, North Somerset, South Devon, Worcestershire, Essex and North East England.

They're pitching it at a business. Virgin don't offer any business services over their FTTP network, CityFibre's committed rate on their 2.5Gb service is 70 down and 35 up.

If that is CF's committed rate then how can IDNet state a minimum of 900Mb?

Presumably they are happy that on the balance of probabilities they can make that commitment. Bear in mind that the promise made by an ISP to you results in letting you cancel if they can't deliver, the contract between CityFibre and their ISPs will have far higher consequences for any breach.

I guess as the altnets grow openreach will have to offer affordable symmetrical multigig eventually so they want to sweat the price as much as they can while they can.
