Opinions on car choice

There are tons of that shape corolla well within the op's budget - they get a bad rep but I've never found them significantly different to any other generic hatch from that era - the 2zz version is even reasonably entertaining

Agreed, and a quick look at the forums on the Toyota OC reveals how reliable these are. To some that may equate with 'boring'; to me, it's just sensible (which I'm aware may equate with boring as well :)).

not sure with them quite a lot of them are well over my budget..

True that... a quick look on Autotrader shows they're not as cheap as might be expected. The reason is presumably their reputation for reliability. However, this -- combined with cheap insurance -- means you may save some money in the long run, so if you like them it may be worth trying to find a nice one. Maybe see if there's one near where you are and take it for a spin? (Something you should do anyway, whatever car people advise you to get.)

Which shape is that for then? Gen 6? (4 lights on the front) - check the engines as the 1.8 is 115bhp, pretty economical but also pretty slow

If gen 7 then be careful of the 140 bho early cars, the engines can eat themselves so ideally you want something thats had a recent new engine /rebuild or just check the oil very regularly

I think im going for a toyota celica!
Thanks guys, didn't think id be able to afford one as there sporty cars but insurance is only £1100 fully comp which isn't bad at all.

Good choice :) are you looking at Gen6 or Gen7? i had a gen 6 1.8 ST in black whilst i was at uni and it was a fantastic car, it was the smaller 1.8 and did about 37mpg. The interior doesn't have the best build quality but mechanics are bullet proof, typical for a toyota! They are great fun to drive.

did it bring you insurance down by much adding a couple of older drivers?

A pic of it along with the astra cabrio i had parked behind it :)
