I'm not normally one for the rumour mill but I found this to be somewhat telling. It's more of an "oops" than an official confirmation but I think it's the best indications yet that there is something due soon.

Of course, this is no surprise to everyone but it's amusing to hear it effectively confirmed in this way.

You've got to wonder sometimes if Apple orchestrate these 'leaks'. I really don't buy that such a senior manager at such a large company would misspeak like that myself and I can't help thinking that Apple asked a few select partners to drop vague hints.

It does depend on the buzz, for all apple refuse to discuss it they really benefit from the anticipation generated by all the rumors...

That was something that came up recently...

I was going to get a Macbook & iPhone this month for web but i am holding out for this to see what they bring out, this sound like it would be best of both worlds.

Apple as most of know are one of the most secretive organisations around. Given that no 100% legit pics of the iPhone 3G were never leaked before the thing was shown off by Steve just reinforces that.

It's hard to believe that these little sparse hints of a tablet are by accident imo.

actually I do believe you could be wrong there.
I remember seeing the back of the 3G many months prior to its release and I think it was the real deal..

I think anyway.

Apple do control the leaks. Its all apart of advertising/hype and directions to throw your competiors.

I think its been confirmed there was an Apple Tablet for quite some time now.

Loads of people close to the Apple VPs have said that they leak information on purpose. I'd be suprised if they didn't.

However, there is a difference between the strategic leaks and the downright event-ruining ones. In fact the only time I remember when it was this bad was just before Steve came back and put a massive lockdown / scare tactic on future projects.

This just sounds like an overzealous hardware partner wanting to get the scoop, or a CEO wanting to look clever to the press.. Something that Steve has been known to flip out about and pull future deals with before (*cough*ATI*cough*) ;)

Hmm why would they makes up these leaks.....seriously?...what would te Orange boss of all people be the one to leak it?....and realisitcally, how many poeple are even reading about this?....its a pretty poor job or creating buzz from a possibly made up leak, so poor in fact that I dont believe they would have leaked it cause its been a absolute trash of rumour milling.

Plus he retracted what he mistook to be ansewered at the hint of their being such a device, id actually laugh if nothing was mentioned about it at the conference now!

Plus I believe somthing about poeple getting the translation worng.

Would be cool to have a slot for your sim card. Doubles up as a conference machine of some description?

Jean-Pierre Elkabbach (the interviewer) : According to Le Point (a french magazine), your partner Apple will be launching a tablet
Stéphane Richard: Yes.
Jean-Pierre Elkabbach: ... equipped with a webcam.
Stéphane Richard: Yes.
Jean-Pierre Elkabbach: Will Orange customers also be able to enjoy it?
Stéphane Richard: Of course!, they will actually particularly enjoy it because the webcam will allow live video streaming. It's a new take on mobile video-conferencing.

Apple are the ones who leak information to their press buddies (Walt Mosberg, David Pogue etc) and give them scoops on the next big thing to create a stir.. that's without a random engineer blabbing to a rumor site.

As for numbers; once this story hit engadget you can bet it was dugg, and will hit the stock price. Easily.

It was 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.. he admitted something that the press went crazy about so now everyone looks bad.

It looks okay, if you want a larger iPhone then I guess it works

Really?...I find it hard to believe a bunch of Execs have some kinda secret meeting and sit around each other having a conversation along the lines of...

"Right...ill them we have ordered some 11" touch screens, but I wont say anything more, what you are you gonna tell your press buddies?"

And as for Engadget and Digg numbers?...their arnt that high, on Digg where the news and rumour is daily, each story might have about 300 diggs really.

Have stock prices budged since the rumours leaked, havnt seen or heard anything.

But you believe that execs at orange and other companies (necessarily highly successful astute people) would accidentally blab about it's existence in an interview? I know which I see as more likely.

And it is successful, every tech site of note has something or another about it, even places like the BBC are calling it 'much anticipated'

Yeah, I can see Apple strategically leaking information.

I've read they use it to their benefit (to much effect) and as a smokescreen to leak false information. Like I said, I can't get a source but I've heard they leak information to gauge public reaction, throw people off the scent (smokescreen) and to find the blabbermouth*

*Done by telling different people different facts.

As for stock price; it's been floundering the last few days since the tablet rumors, but it took a hit after Orange supposedly spilt the beans.

I follow the stock because I own a few shares :p
