Our cat has adopted a second home - anything we can do?

You know it makes sense.

You can't complain that your cat ends up in another persons house when you allow it to roam wherever it wants, cats go into other peoples houses regardless of encouragement. The only workable solution is to be responsible and confine your animals to your property.

Cat's are not like dogs - with a few exceptions, their natural habitat is outdoors. Cats have always straddled the line between domesticated animal and wild animal.

Exactly why you shouldn't get a cat if you don't have the land to keep it on, same as a horse, lama, or any other animal that needs outdoor space.

OP you need to keep it in really... like you do with a new cat. he probably thinks he lives there now.

in 20odd years of having cats we have never had this problem until recently when our cat kept going missing for days at a time, then he went missing for 3 weeks! we found him a few streets away and hes fat as **** , the problem is hes a really nice cat . people just pick him up in the street and he doesnt care :/ ive seen kids carrying him around like hes a teddybear:o

Try keeping it indoors for a couple of weeks, should break the behaviour and allow the neighbours cat to reassert it's dominance over it's territory.

The parents cat occasionally visits the neighbours if they're out during the day. He's a cocky little so and so and just marches into their house, and I'm pretty sure they feed him on the odd occasion since they lost their own cat due to old age. He usually reappears within 5 minutes of someone getting home.
