Ok, so my main reason for starting this is I've got some Houmous that's dated use-by the 13th. I'm guessing it'll probably be ok still, but who knows.

I know use by is fairly strict, but best before is just down to quality of the item.

Anyway, what's the most extreme out of date item you've ever eaten, either out of hunger and desperation or curiousity? And will my Houmous be ok :( ?

neither are strict, use common sense and your bodies natural reactions, we are generally disgusted by mould and smell of things that have gone off. How do you think we cope before some arbitrary on eh safe side number.

It'll be fine

I'll usually look at the use by date and if it's gone just throw it away. Not worth running the risk of ******** through the eye of a needle just for the sake of one meal. :)

Ate three eggs that were supposed to have gone off in August this week. They were all definite floaters, too!

Cracked them open, smelt fine, looked fine. I was only making egg-fried rice anyway so it didn't matter if the consistency was a little off. Tasted fine :)

It depends what it is.

Prepacked, sealed stuff with lots of preservatives then I would still eat it a couple days if it smells fine.

Bread I ignore the date totally, I keep bread in the fridge anyway so as not as its not mouldy, i eat it like a week after i bought it, sometimes 2. I just make toasts with it.

Yeah totally depends what it is and where I've kept it.

If I've kept it in the fridge I usually don't care that much unless it smells funny...

it all depends on how well the food as been looked after.

my fridge is set to be very cold because i like ice cool milk , so anything in it generally lasts well past its sell by date , i had a week out of date bottle of milk and it was still perfectly fine.

i had a 2 week out of date loaf of bread in the fridge to no mould at all.

if you use your loaf and are aware the general guidelines are probably based on a temprature above what most people would store them at just to get people to bin them and buy more sooner

Most things I'm alright with, being a student. I just wondered why Houmous had such a short date.. I'll normally cook meat and eggs even if they're out of date, so long as you're hygienic and cook it properly there shouldn't be any problems.

I remember a news article a few years ago where some tins of food from the Napoleonic wars were opened and fed to cats. The cats were fine.

If food looks right, smells right and tastes right it usually is right.

Aren't the dates on food being reassessed anyway? Most "Out of date" food that gets thrown away is perfectly fine to eat, it's too strict.

I can tell if something's out of date regardless of what it says on the label, it usually starts to smell funny anyway.
