Over researching before buying an item

I think it's great to be an informed consumer, so many people i know just buy something on a whim and end up with tosh/paid over the odds. This especially counts with technology (one recent example is someone paying £30 for a video game that i then pointed out was available for £12.99 online!).

I get mocked for spending a week choosing a torch of all things, but when we went camping recently who's torch did everyone keep asking to borrow? It's just the sign of someone who cares about what their hard earned money is invested in.

Yes I do and by the time I've decided that it's the right purchase it's either gone or the offer has been missed. I'm not that impulsive.

I'm like this. I'll spend a few weeks researching something e.g. a new bike, holiday, etc to the point where I think I know everything about it, then I decide not to buy it. It's stupid.

I'm the same; research, research, research!!
I was out with the father-in-law last weekend at a local computer shop and he bought a monitor, psu and wireless mouse & keyboard just by browsing!! I mean wtf!!

I do this with prices. If I see a cd for £7.99, I'll spend 30 minutes trying to find a site that sells it for £6.99 etc. If I decide on a product that's £150, I don't really think if it's worth that much, I think if only I could find it for £135 etc

worse is the holidays took us 5 weeks to decide on a hotel

/damned tripadvisor **shakes fist**

5 weeks?

Mine took 5 mins. Lol

Somethings i research, things I know nothing about but want it. I.e. If I decide to get a home cinema tomorrow i will spend the next 2 weeks reading into it like mad.

If i am buying a new watch or something i will just have a budget and find the one i like, rather than the best. That's hat I did with the hotel, my sister recommended it, it was within budget, i booked it.

I am terrible! So glad it isn't just me. :D

I will research and analyse and read information to the point where I won't buy anything. I'll get hung up on little details that probably wouldn't really make a difference, I will spend vastly over my original budget because I believe I'm getting what I want even in the face of people telling me opposite.

:(:(

Currently doing that now for a new phone contract. My current handset is a non touch screen and I'm happy with it. So do I go for the free gift? Something I could probably get cheaper on its own if I wanted a new camera or iPad thing. Which I'm not sure if I do.

No because there is no such thing - you simply get a lower end phone or a more expensive contract to subsidise the cost of the 'gift'.

This is why it's turning into a PITA.

I don't care for amazing phones, I'm happy with the one I have now. So I'm actually happy to buy a crap one and use the sim on my existing handset. The contract's no problem as there's a range of prices where both the cheap and expensive ends satisfy my needs. So once the phone's out of the equation I'm left looking at random gifts - may as well get something I can use or sell on.

However one thing that has made the old ears stand up, is the fact that I can stick my sim into a iPad and use the net allowance on either device. (I think other devices do the same, not sure??...). I'm sure I'll find a portable device like that useful. However if I haven't even bothered to use the net on a handset so far, what will make me think about carrying an iPad around?

Urgh....

So why not get a SIM only deal for circa £15 a month?

And then spend what I save each month getting a free gift should and when I want it. Aye that's probably the most prudent of courses..

18 months ago a new laptop was what I wanted - but looking at the range of free gifts atm there's nothing that takes my eye at all.

im am perhaps the worst person in the world for this, i research everything extensively, but i think its a good trait, ive never bought something and been unhappy, bought a 306 gti6 a fenix torch, a canon a470 and 3 tvs, oh and my htc desire.
Loved them all
