Hi All

So a mate of mine gave me a mobo that allows overclocking, so after installing it (and having a battle with getting the graphics card to display properly ). I now have my sandy sitting at 2.7Ghz, that boots up windows etc… now its “windows stable” as in it boots up and I can use programs I think, but I want to make sure that its 100% stable so I want to stress test it.

I have prime and ran that for 5 mins to see what temps I get and max I seen was ~46oC, I’m thinking anything less than 50-55 is ok?

Now with prime how do I know something’s wrong? Will it say that it’s failed if so will it just stop running?

Also any advice on ram? I have the cheap bargain bin 4x512mb ddr400 stuff.

Ta Muchly!

Hey there. I had my old 3700 at 2.8 @ 1.45v. Was F@H stable for about 3 days :) Temps are fine, generally aim for bellow 60c, although above that isn't crucial.

F@H = folding at home right? is that better to use then?

also what settings were you using, I'm at 2.7 with auto vcore (1.3ish?) ht 11x and 245ish fsb?

Yeh F@H is folding at home, i'm not sure if it's better to use, but it put 100% load on the cpu for a few days :)

Off the top of my head, i was using 11x255 with 1.45v.

My one, which now sitting in the family OC, is happy at 245Mhz x11. vCore is 1.37. Idle temps on my old, trusty, Zalman is in the mid 40s and load gets into the low 60s. This was achieved without really trying.

Run Orthos overnight to ensure stability. The program will log errors. If you wake up and there is still a Green "Go", you can be pretty sure it's stable.

Oh right I thought Orthos was for Dual Cores only, I'll be getting that later :D

1 more question, shall I manually set the voltage or leave it on auto?

Edit: my temps are on a coolmaster fan that come with the pc at the time.

I've not used Orthos on quad - but I believe you can set it up with 2 instances running. Someone will respond no doubt.

EDIT - decided I was being lazy - check out this thread:

The purists will say that you should put everying on manual in the BIOS for maximum control. However, at the 20% tweaking level, I see no harm in keeping voltages at auto.

ok thanks a lot for your input guys, this is my first oc so a bit nervy but it seems to be very easy upto now. I'm thinking that 2.8 should hopefully be achievable on my setup, although anything higher than 2.6 is fantastic for me. Screenies will follow tomorrow :D

Just a little update, sitting at a little over 2.8, was prime stable (3 1/2 - 4 hours) at 2.750, then whacked it up to 2.9 and got a few BSOD's so I guess I up the vcore slightly right? ((Edit: the vcore is on default, which is 1.344v thats shown on CPU-Z)) Temps at 2.8ish are at the most are just about touching 50oC. I think ill limit my Oc to not more than 55oC just to be safe.

I will also do the 8 hours prime test on 2.8 for good measure on friday night

I can see 3Ghz!!! :p

P.s sorry to keep bumping it up, and I promise screenshots will follow.
