Overclocking MSI P67A-GD65 with 2600K

Hi all,

I have a very strange problem. I can't even begin to overclock my system, because when I get to this screen:

msi-p67a-gd55-bios4.jpg

The CPU frequency on the top-right says 20.84GHz (Despite the 10KHz base clock being 10000 and the multiplier 34) and the system locks up within 5 seconds.

I found this thread:

http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=144484.0

And people are having what seems to be a similar issue, though not exactly the same, and the problem is that for me this happens even though I am using BIOS version 1.4.

Update bios. I am still getting the stupid 20GHz thing in corner but it fixed the bios lock up I was getting whenever I tried to save or accidently clicked with mouse and it is running fine currently.

Ah OK sounds like a good fix. Which version are you using 1.6 or 1.7? There is a version 1.7 in the wild don't know if I should try that, but MSI's website lists 1.6 as the latest.

I can't remember I used the live update thing in the bios using the disc. I am planning on changing to beta drivers this afternoon though so will see what occurs with them.

OK this is all going wrong now.

I used the liveupdate in the BIOS and it said the latest version was 1.1 (a downgrade). All my other attempts to flash the BIOS (USB key, LiveUpdate in windows) have failed so I figured I may as well try it.

It took ages, and the OC section no longer says 20GHz, it says the correct 3.4GHz. But it still crashes within seconds. And to compound matters, Windows now thinks my copy of Windows is not genuine :/ I thought it was tied to the motherboard not the BIOS version :/

You'll need to flash back to version 1.4 or later, as when I used the liveupdate utility on the disc it did exactly the same thing for me. Windows said it wasn't genuine and it eventually started hanging on the windows logo. If you can still get into Windows or have another PC then download the MSI HQ USB Flashing Tool http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=119375.0 (you'll need to register if you haven't already). Also download a copy of BIOS 1.4 or later (no need to extract it) and then follow the instructions on the flashing tool. Once done, restart and keep pressing F11 to bring up the boot menu and select your USB drive. Follow the instructions from there.

I've got the MSI GD65 and 2500k.

Took me a while to figure out the bios upgrade but easiest thing to do is download the rom from the internet (I've gone for v1.7) and save onto any USB stick (preference is below 2Gb size, but mine worked on 4Gb size).

Boot into the bios and plug the usb stick in and I think in setting there's options for load file from USB device. double click and it'll flash the bios for you.

I'm currently at 4.5Ghz with 1.325vc and waiting to see how high i can go with that voltage.

Farewell, motherboard, it was nice knowing you.

I used the "boot from file" option in the BIOS and booted version 1.6. It worked great! I did this because to just run a file you don't need to flash the BIOS - it just runs this version of the BIOS straight from the USB stick. It advised me that if I wanted to get the old BIOS back I should restart the system with the USB stick removed to force it to boot the normal BIOS. I did this. It didn't work. It just powered up, then powered down and rebooted itself. So I tried the other option it had suggested - clear the CMOS. Did the same thing. Now my computer just reboots and reboots in an endless cycle, displays nothing on screen, and gives no beep error codes. I think the motherboard is ******.

Unless someone can suggest something that might help? I don't think there is much I can try.

Update: By mucking around with the RAM (I now have 1 slot of ram only in DIMM2) I am able to get the computer to stay on rather than turn itself off. But there is still no output to the screen.

Changing the RAM back to the correct slots had the same effect - the computer now powers on, powers off, powers on, powers off very quickly, powers on and then stays on. Nothing comes up on the screen.

Hmm I decided to try out the beta bios 1.85 and it has the bios lockup when you save and exit. Guess I will trying 1.7. I only get constant power cycling if my ram gets set too high. Could always unplug the computer fully and try cmos reset after like a minute of it being unplugged think that kind of thing used to work.

Tried & Failed

Any other ideas?

Nope I am finding the 1.1 drivers the best. If I try my 1.1 overclock in 1.4 it just gets Machine Check errors and I can only get into windows with defaults. And then anything higher is causing the stupid lockup. Hope this gets fixed today or I may consider returning it and going ASUS instead. The 20GHz thing alone on 1.1 to 1.4 is annoying enough as 1.1 shows to have been 'released' on 1/11/2010. Which is stupid if they couldn't fix that.

Haven't seen a response from them in hours which is quite off putting. I am wondering can you guys install MEI driver aswell? I get "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software".

Surely we are not only ones with these problems. Really think I may order a new board and send this one back for a refund. MSI don't seem to care on the forums I don't think anyone has got a straight answer from the support website. Everyone else seems to have no problems so it must be a defect on some boards.
