Hey guys i'm new to the forums so just want to say hey, I recently put together a new system, I've got an Asus P5Q Pro Mobo and a Q6600 CPU, I'm looking to overclock the CPU, I've upped the FSB to the stable cap as far as i'm aware (381 stable after running Prime95) But i'm abit stumped where to go from here, I've read the guides, Several of them actually, I still can't quite put my finger down on it, I've got the appropriate cooling, current temps don't push any further 45C with prime stressing the CPU, It's currently at 3.5 GHZ So any help at all would be very much appreciated (My CPU OCing is extremely limited)

Thanks for reading.

First thing first, do you use stock cooler or upgraded one?

Sorry, just notice that you got appropriate cooling...

Did you just changed the FSB and leave everything else on auto?

Yeah i've left everything on auto, Just the FSB to find the cap that it's most stable at so windows boots etc. The rest is all left on it's basics

Hehe thanks, Just abit stumped where to go from here, The raised fsb is nice but now i need to do the rest and i can't make heads of tails of it.

Interesting thread, i just bought the same board and chip too and i am going to be having a go this weekend at some overclocking now i have my system settled.

What ram and cpu cooler are you using by the way ?

Also what program are you using to monitor cpu temps, as currentluy i have tried a few and they all report different temperatures ?

Cheers and GZ on the overclock so far !

I'm using water cooling for my CPU and such, Couple of fans aswell to keep the mobo cool, mobo as cpu and ram is: Asus PQ5 pro motherboard, Q6600 CPU Geil Black Dragon 2x 2gig rams 800 mhz
Can't go wrong with this set-up btw lad it's a very good set-up, atm i'm running extremely well but i want to understand abit more about overclocking and seeing how far my system can go :)

It's showing 1.3250v
1.325 may be the vid of your cpu, you can check this using coretemp, most q6600 will clock to 3ghz or so on the vid (aka stock volts) when the voltage is set to auto the cpu may be using more volts than neccesary for the clockspeed, therefore generating more heat and higher temps. could you post up some pics of coretemp and cpuz while prime95 small fft test is running.

Id suggest downloading cpuz, found here.

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Run this app when priming and this will show the cpu voltage being used when the cpu is under load, your temps seem a wee bit on the high side for your current clockspeed. Auto voltage may be feeding more volts than you need.

I don't have all my fans on maximum, or my radiator, due to the missus being a kip, so keeping it quiet, Normally when everythings maxxed though it won't push further than 45 C heres a picy of my comp with CPU-Z Prime and CPU temp:

Id try going into the bios and setting the cpu voltage manually to 1.425, keep your current fsb, and also change the following voltages to +0.02v (2notches above auto)

CPU PLL
FSB TERM
NB

The p5q are notorious for overvolting theese settings on auto or lowest manual setting, also select the FSB-NB strap of 333mhz, and make sure the memory frequency is running below its rated speed of 800mhz (this will rule the ram out of any stability issues with your cpu oc). Test theese settings for 20 mins or so with small fft and if it does ok, go back into bios and up the fsb 10mhz or so and test again. you ideally want to keep your temps under 75'c when priming

Thanks a lot for your time to reply and help me, I'll try these settings and keep you posted, Again can't thank you enough for helping a 'newbie' like myself at overclocking.

Under the voltage section in the ai overclock section of the bios youll find the following voltages listed.

CPU PLL
FSB TERM
NB

Set theese to +0.02v:)

press the + key on the numpad twice when theyre on auto, and this will set em right.

Should read like this when changed.

CPU PLL, 1.52
FSB TERM, 1.22
NB, 1.12
