Obviously as a travelling tourist, its not immediately obvious what the speed limit on our motorway is. There aren o 70mph signs, just a motorway one at the slip road to signify the start of motorway rules.

So anyway he decides to do the speed that everybody else is doing as a "best guess" type of thing. So he does 80 + mph in the outside lane with everybody else.

And then he finds out the limit. 70. Precisely the speed everybody was not doing lol.

Err he was Canadian? Did you not pick up on that from the rest of his jokes about driving in Canada :) ? It was on the Michael McIntyre Glasgow ep right?
 
I am no lawyer but I understood that for a law to remain enforcable it has to be applied consistently

As there is no speed enforcement on motorways - I say the speeding laws are null and void on motorways - and receiving a speeding ticket for < 100 mph would be laughed out of court

Hell one day there was a police convoy on the M40 cruising at exactly 70 and the policeman was waving everybody past - indicating they should ignore the speed limit and overtake - which they did with gusto ...

(c) ??? that should be obvious - speed difference between stationary vehicle on hard shoulder and slow lane = about 70 mph // difference between slow and middle lane = about 20 mph // obviously the slow lane is more dangerous due to the presence of a hard shoulder

[edit] kinetic energy involved in 50mph impact is 6.25 times more than at 20mph

Those terms do however promote a misinformed view of what the lanes are for and why they should be used.

I wouldn't be surprised to find a good correlation between people who describe the lanes as fast and slow and people who sit in the middle or outside lane all the time.
 
I see a lot of people on forums harp on about the speedo will over read and is made to etc. I have used satnav in various cars and the speedo at 70mph is very accurate. Both my cars show 69mph indicated by speedo when satnav is on 70mph. This means at 79mph speedo, it would be 77.9mph real speed. You could get done for that if you were unlucky.

It's not some urban myth, its absolutely true and for good reason. Every car I've been in has under read by at least a few mph at motorway speeds

get your head out of the highway code and instead look at whats in front of you on a motorway.

On most UK motorways unless its either A) very empty or b) very busy the traffic in the outside lane will nearly always be doing 80 mph +, the middle lane about 60-70mph and everybody on the inside lane doing 50-60.

Anybody who goes outside of those general trends, usually ends up getting tailgaited !

cant remember where i saw it or who said it. If you saw the same sketch too then it probably was him. Reason i said american is because i don't remember the whole thing.

I don't know what Motorways you drive on but I personally think he's absolutely spot on. There is no 'fast lane' and 'slow lane'.

But you've admitted in the past to sitting in the middle lane for miles on end, so I'm not sure I'm that suprised.

you'll usually find me sat in the outside lane doing a nice GPS 83 mph :p

I'll only sit in the middle lane when you can do 83mph GPS without constantly changing lanes, which is usually only at 7am on a sunday etc.. when you'll find most are in the inside lane, so i just sit in the empty middle lane, rather than constantly changing lanes round the slower motorists.
 
You are supposed to change lanes around slower motorists.

Keep left unless overtaking. Thats how it works. That doesnt mean 'Oh I'll need to move out around that car in 30 seconds time so I'll just sit here in the middle lane instead'.

I'll also remember you do 83mph GPS for the next time you post having a whinge about how much fuel costs, have you any idea how much cheaper your motorway journeys would be at even 5mph slower?
 
when the middle + outside lanes are completely empty, whats the point ?

i can see the point in NOT doing it when your doing 70mph and you'll get overtaken every 20 seconds by a car of some sort. But when i'm sat in the middle lane doing 84 gps on a sunday i'll rarely if ever get overtaken.

What worries me is that not only do people like MrLOL drive around in a special little bubble of fail in the middle lane everywhere, they do so at almost 90mph indicated on cruise control.

Just what we need. A bunch of inattentive people for whom the highway code is just too challenging to read properly bombing around way over the speed limit.

Cracking stuff.

Hopefully we'll have another oil crisis soon so they wont be able to afford to do it.
 
if its 7am on a sunday, and the motorway is empty, and i'm the fastest person on it, who exactly am i inconveniencing by sitting in the middle lane ?

I can take your point if i'm doing 70, and people are constantly having to move across 2 lanes to overtake me, but if i'm the one doing the overtaking, and nobody is overtaking me, who am i bothering ?

Thats the only time you'll find me in the middle lane, as at most times, to do 84mph gps you'll need to stick in the outside lane as its too busy.

Every other time you'll find me in the outside lane, moving over when gaps arise to let the Audi A4 2.0tdi s-line drivers by who wish to do 100 + :D

I've already agreed that sitting in the middle lane when its busy is probably going to make a pain of yourself.
