They're finally extending Oyster use to my neck of the woods from 2nd Jan but I have a query about how the calculate fares.

My journey will be as follows (using PAYG):

Touch in at National Rail station (new zone 'G')
Touch out at Fenchurch Street (Zone 1)
Touch in at Tower Hill (Zone 1)
Touch out at Westminster (Zone 1)

With the transition from National rail to tube, does it still count as a single Zone G to Zone 1 journey, or do they break it down and charge for two journeys (Zone G to Zone 1 and Zone 1 to Zone 1)?

If you do it that way you will be charged for two journeys because you are touching out and touching back in again.

I've gone through the price checker and proposed new pricing from 2nd Jan, but really want to hear from someone who does a similar National Rail/Tube journey to make sure.

The TFL price checker implies (if I enter Rainham as the start point, which is also a NR station on the same line and Westminster tube as the destination) that it only counts as a single journey, rather than two separate ones.

If you use PAYG and touch in/out inbetween your National Rail and Tube journey then you'll be charged for two separate journeys.

I used to use PAYG and on the odd occasion that I'd go into Paddington on NR and continue on the Bakerloo line I'd be charged for two separate journeys, because you have to go out and in two different sets of barriers. Even though it's the same station! It's stupid. Now I buy a zone 1-3 travelcard and can go that way without the worry.

I imagine it shows as a single journey because you can get on the tube network at somewhere like West Ham en route and take the Jubilee Line to Westminster so can technically make it one journey. If you touch out and then in again though it will be 2 journeys.

If it's your commute - travelcard?
