I have encrypted files, which version of vista will I need?

Hi guys

As title says. Which Vista will I need to still use EFS?

Thank you

Yup, upgrading is fine. As long as that OEM version stays on the same machine (and therefore the upgrade goes on that machine).

I think business is the one to go for, purely because of Remote Desktop. Yeah OK so you can use VNC but it's awful in comparison.

Seeing as you're tied into only being able to use it on the one machine anyway due to the XP Professional OEM license, you may as well buy Vista Business on an OEM license as well, and save a ton of cash. Or take this oppertunity to build a new system. You can get OEM Windows XP Professional with a free upgrade to Windows Vista Business for £91.

Well the OEM license can't be transferred, so even if the Vista upgrade can be moved around, you need to upgrade from something. It would probably work just popping the OEM CD in when Vista asks, but that doesn't make it legal.

It's not illegal, just against the terms of the eula. Using the full upgrade on another pc should be fine though even by microsofts nazi standards.

When you upgrade, you need to upgrade from something. In this case it's an OEM version, which is tied to one machine. You can't move that license from that machine, so a Vista upgrade would have to go on that machine as well.

If the license doesn't bother you, then go ahead, but it's a waste of money because you still won't be licensed.

I didnt say I was going to use it on another pc, I just wanted to know the facts coz its a bit confusing. So if someone did buy a 'full upgrade' version to upgrade XP OEM, are they entitled to a rebate of difference in cost between the oem upgrade and the full upgrade?

You just have to love microsofts policys, it's the only product I can think where you may as well just pirate it if you want to transfer it to another pc.

There's no such thing as a full upgrade or an OEM upgrade, there's just an upgrade. OEM versions are full installs.

well tbh you dont need the license to upgrade just the CD of the OS

I never said it wouldn't install, hell, nothing stops you transferring the OEM install around as much as you like. Just because it installs though, doesn't mean you're licensed. And if you don't care if you're licensed or not, you might as well just go and torrent it.

No, that's not true.

Say for example I buy an OEM version of Windows, and install it on my PC. Then I get a new system, and install it on that. It wants me to call Microsoft to activate, so I phone and lie that I had to format because something failed. I get a new code, and Windows activates perfectly, and Genuine Advantage lets me download all the great freebies.

It looks fine, runs fine, but is in violation of the OEM license, and therefore isn't a licensed product. Now that might not bother anyone, but like I've said numerous times in the thread, why bother spending money on it if you have no plans to adhere to the license agreement anyway?

no what i mean is u buy a OEM XP and install on a PC 1 then say u buy vista upgrade and install on PC 2 and it ask for ** previous windows disc, u put in OEM XP disc and it installs Vista and then u activate it on PC 2.

Now you OEM XP license is still on PC 1 (the product key)
