I have been away this week and my lodger has left my beautiful P50GT50B on for 36 hours straight. I now have a burnt EC/SAT message in the top left corner.

I've left the TV on various channels and euns of the analogue fuzz, but it is still faintly there and can be seen in lighter shades when I stand 2 feet from it.

Will it go?

If not, I am going to get him to buy me a new one. What is the modern equivilent in terms of colours and black levels?

Not really bothered by 4k. But looking for as good or better colours and black levels.

I paid £1,000 for this 4 years ago, I am fuming mad.

It will take longer than a few hours, if I remember rule of thumb was how ever long it took to get the IR it would take 3x as long to get rid of it:eek: so 108 hrs of a scrolling bar to get rid

It's never taken that long with mine.

Got mine in the bedroom and I used to fall asleep all the time with static stuff
on the screen, stuff like the Sky planner or the DroidBox home screen:D

Been very surprised I've only had the odd bit of IR, always just run the scrolling bar
or the slides I used to burn it in and it's sorted it pretty quick.

Got the sleep timer set for two hours these days:D

Some are more prone than others I had 2 lx5090's the first would show letterbox IR after about 30mins and the longer I watched something the longer it would take to go, it took pioneer nearly 6 months to agree to change it my second one was bulletproof i did a starwars marathon (all 6 one after another) and there wasn't a hint of letterbox bars afterwards.

Took about a month to loose a logo off my panny UT50B after I'd watched the same channel every evening for a few months. Just normal viewing on other channels that filled the panel did the job.

it may also never be fully gone 36 hours is a very long time. i know if i have watched footy for 2 hours it can take quite a while for the logo to go, minimum 2 hours of other content.

the modern equivalent would be an OLED but they come in 55" and are superior in every way so there is no like for like modern equivalent..

I would say it isn't fair for them to pay the full amount for a new set but possibly whatever your GT50 is worth which is around £475. oled's cost a minimum of £1100.

What I would do is say give me £550 and you can keep the GT50 and I'll get an OLED, or they pay for the damage caused say £150 max and I keep the GT50.

your lucky that your tv is one of the last plasmas made and has kept it's value because OLED's are so expensive and the only true upgrade. had you bought an lcd of around that time for say £1500, today it would be worth £300 max. so getting more than £475 for it would make up for the stress/hassle caused.

Was lodger briefed about leaving the TV on/is he knowledgeable about plasma TVs and burn-in?

If neither it seems a bit harsh to charge him a grand for leaving the TV on.

Your post mostly in italics added a good air of seething tension

not only that but if it's a "communal" tv then you could argue it would be pretty much impossible to force someone to pay £1100+ for leaving a tv on overnight.

should have stuck the plasma in the bedroom and stuck a lcd in the communal area / living room

LG 910/930 is a cracking TV.

Not enough content to warrant 4k tv's yet IMO.

Even putting aside the subjective nature of that argument, a lot depends on how often you buy a new TV. If you buy one every year then by all means ignore 4K for now but, if you want to keep it for longer then future proofing comes into it.

I've just replaced an 8-year old 1080p set and I expect the new one to last at least 5-6 years, so not getting a 4K one would be stupidly short-sighted.

Seriously? Retention after two hours?!

I don't know how people put up with that, I really don't. I couldn't deal with having to worry about how long a logo has been on the screen all the time. If you get issues after a two hour footy game, what about things which go on for days?

I'm also reading that there are now concerns about similar issues with OLED panels.

Well it's not that noticeable but it's there if your looking for it.

Put it this way, nobody else ever sees any retention on either or samsung or panny plasma. However I can spot it straight away but I know what I'm looking for.

So for most people who don't have a clue about tv's you could say they live with it quite easily. However I live with it by only using the tv for movies and tv series. I don't watch live tv or stuff with logos on it. I have a 55" LCD for that in the living room.
