Hi guys, hope you are all well!

I need your help to determine what is wrong with my mobo, basically i had a problem with windows 7 not finding my 2nd hard drive so i checked the cables to make sure they were as they should be and then put all the usb cables back and the ethernet cables in and then the dvi adapter, i then switched on the psu and heard a quick electrical poof noise.

I disregarded the noise and pressed the power button and the fans came on as well as my hd4890 fan but there was no activity from my usb`s, monitor(stayed in stand-by), ethernet port and no activity from my hard drive.

Now i am a bit concerned that it was caused by my psu, which is bit frustrating if that is the case as i have only had it six months and it is a corsair 650 tx, which are said to be a good psu!! Could it be also that it was just a spike that could have killed the mobo?

As it stands, my pc will power on but i cant hear it post bios as there is no beep and the monitor wont switch on and the usb keyboard and mouse dont light up!

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Have you another PSU that you could try ? A while back I was in exactly the same situation thinking a motherboard had given up when all the case fans / cpu fan / g/card all spun up but no boot .... tried an old psu and its still in there working away :)

Yeah, i have an old hiper tucked away somewhere, though i cant help but think that if it is the psu then it would have taken the mobo as well, and i am dreading sending the psu back for rma as this unamed competitor is about as much help as a chocolate watch!!

Oh well let`s hope it is just the psu as i took quite a liking to the p5q-e.

I had pretty much exactly the same with both a P5Q-E and a Pro Turbo, turned out they were both dead in the water ...

The good thing i suppose is that it is still under warranty(i think) being less than a year old. i might have to avoid the asus p45 range if they are as fragile as the ones you have had!!

The board I was dealing with at the time was a Gigabyte and I was convinced the mobo was tatty bread .... but as mentioned whenever I tried another psu its never looked back . Fingers crossed for you ....

Cheers mate, well i shall find out tomorrow morning when i dig out my old psu and let you know my findings!!

Now this is starting to bug me!! I put the pc on this morning after umpteen atempts last night to see if there was any change and low and behold the thing fired up 1st time of asking and working just as it was before this little incident!

I aint sure i can put this to bed though as i think there may be an underlying issue to be resolved? I was thinking that the psu might of had an issue and it shut it self down in it`s own safe mode?? Can corsair psu`s do this??

I would power down / disconnect power cable going to PSU . Then double check ALL connections to motherboard and components, don't forget to check case fans as well. Make sure everything is connected securely and there is no signs of damage to cables ... just to help rule out any obvious shorting. As for the PSU .... Ive taken this from the Corsair 650 TX section ..

'Over Current/Voltage/Power Protection, Under Voltage Protection, and Short Circuit Protection provide maximum safety to your critical system components. '

forgot to say DON'T FORGET to ground yourself first before poking around your motherboard ....

Cheers for your help,

Though the 1st thing i done when this happened was exactly as you have said and there was no signs of damamge to any of the cables and i had a thought that as all the case fans were acting normal and whirring away that the psu had gone into a kind of safe mode, so based on what you have said regarding the over current/voltage and under current/voltage i take it this is what has happened, now all i have to do is find out why it happened!

As i remember it was as i was inserting the ethernet cable when it happened and then i plugged in the cable and switched on the switch then i heard a small sound and then nothing, until this morning when it came back to life.

I am in the process of digging around on the corsair forums to see if i can find an answer there.

Just checked the volt`s and the 12v is at 12.1, so fine there and the 3.3 and 5 volts are well with-in the 5% allowance, so is that to say the psu is ok??

You need to see if its ok under load. test it running intel burn test or prime95 with a torcher test (blend or small FFT). Look for voltage drops or variation - I suspect if their is a problem you will get a BSOD anyway.

Yep, been running prime95 for 25 mins and thus far no voltage drops or variation on the 12v,5v or 3.3v, the psu seems rock solid at the moment.

Scotty365, just off topic, i noticed in your sig that you are running win 7 64 bit, how does it perform in games with the 2gb of ram? I heard you need at least 4gb to make the most of the 64bit version.
