Hi guys,

I'm busy giving the bathroom a revamp. Now a lot of the old paint was peeling from the ceiling, took a scraper to it and it was pretty much just falling off.

Now I'm at the point where I'm back to plaster have a lovely smooth ceiling to paint.

Do I need to prime the surface before paint? Apply a mist coat of emulation? Which method would you guys recommend?

I'm no expert, but I would have thought the plaster surface would already be sealed, having already been painted previously.

On the other hand, maybe it hadn't and that's why the old paint fell off so easily.

Just mist coat it with vinyl matt emulsion, couple of coats then finish it with your chosen paint. For a bathroom ideally you want something that is moisture resistant ie vinyl silk or soft sheen. All too often i read about people using pva to seal walls prior to painting. You should never have pva applied to anything your going to paint. It prevents paint from soaking into the surface, once the pva comes loose your paint comes off with it.
