Paleo / Ketosis diet - anyone else tried it?

I quite like the idea of very low carb, moderate fat and high protein but with a 20 month old and a wife who loves rice/pasta/bread it's not something I can justify when meat in NZ costs so much.

Also, as much as I can see how eating/drinking that each day would lose weight I struggle to see how it's healthy when you haven't gone near a piece of fruit or veg all day and that's an awful lot of sweetener each day when it's in pretty much everything you drink.

Being thinner isn't the same as being healthier so I'd be concerned about swapping one problem for another. It's certainly mpressive weight loss, it has taken me 6 months to drop 20kg but that's been with 1hr daily exercise and sensible eating and I feel healthier not just lighter, I also feel that what I am doing is sustainable which your diet certainly wouldn't be for me.

Not intended as a criticism of you, just an opinion on why I think any diet/eating plan that excludes entire food groups isn't a great idea in the long term.

The thought behind it is that when you take on carbs you eat too much, hence putting on pounds and also crapping a lot out in waste. On the keto style diet you dont go near fruits, its an almost carnivour in nature - and that seems to work well for other mamals.

Its not just being thinner, its being more fully of energy, having better skin, getting better sleep, not having sugar crashes and then highs all day long, lower resting heart rate, better oxygen to CO2 levels and a ton of other stuff too.

I now wish I'd got my blood work checked 2 months ago before I started so I could compare the triglyceride levels.

Ive also not just flicked a switch and cut my eating levels down, thats happened gradually as Ive moved off carb based foods. Im not at a level where Im carrying less body weight and fat therefor dont need to eat as much food and when I do eat Im not taking on too much and adding fat or having to visit the John to get rid of it.

If you can spare an hour listen to the first podcast here - http://www.grc.com/health/lowcarb-podcasts.htm

I'll give it a listen but for now I stand by the point that cutting out all veg/fruit and the vitamins/minerals they contain seems like a bad idea to me. Cutting down on rice/grain/pasta makes sense but I can't see how living on diet fizzy drinks and bacon with cheese is doing your body any good in the long run.

The point is that a paleo diet is quite different than a ketogenic diet. A ketogenic diet will be the most efficient in terms of losing weight for most people, but health wise obviously it is much better to consume vegetables and fruit as well. You can be low carb on paleo, but not necessarily. Many people at their ideal weight will happily consume lots of sweet potatoes, yams, and some less strict people even white rice (around exercise especially). And yes, fruit too, though if you have weight to lose it makes sense to limit fruit a bit.
You really need to find out what works for you. Paleo in itself is, in my opinion, most likely to be one of the healthiest diets to do long term. Ketogenic can help if you really have a lot of weight to shed, as is a pure fat fast.

Spot on.

Ive found this to be ideal for me, I have strong will power and dont lapse into having cheat days or getting pulled in with peer pressure when Im out etc.

As a geek who sits at a PC for 8+ hours a day for work and play I just thought Id share my experience with the forum and that was based from learning about it all from a geeky podcast.

This was a pic of some stuff I got at ASDA at the start of the week, again, not ALL I eat - I vary the stuff each week - sometimes more fish, eggs, lamb, chicken etc ...

and lastly someone pointed me to this which was quite informative if a bit cheesey

Thanks Rikki for this thread. I had a very interesting read and looks ideal for me too. I too sit at a desk all day at work and I don't crave junk food, I'm just sick of being hungry all the time!

Holiday in the sun next year so good time to start.

I'll listen to the podcasts when I have time.

Listened to the podcasts and there's some interesting stuff in there for sure, you seem to have decided by yourself to drop vegetables since he says not to and mentions eating salad, tomato, courgette, etc (just ignore potato, yam and so on). Was there a reason you ditched veg as it was was the total lack of anything green not the low carbs that I found odd/worrying but that doesn't seem to be the case if you follow it as he suggests.

Cutting carbs down dramatically or moderately makes sense as I agree we eat too much sugary/starchy food but I stand by the point that you'd do better to also eat some veg and get some exercise if you're just sat at a computer all day for work and play. This is from my own experience as an IT geek who up until 10 months ago was doing next to no regular exercise.

Thanks for sharing your experience, certainly interesting to hear more about it.

The only veg i ever ate was potato. Dislike the feeling and texture of everything else so thats why it doesnt factor in to my eating now.

The podcast was my introduction not the golden rules :)

Since then ive read and listened to more. The one that stood out was a video from a Dr that explained about how eskimos live. They have not access to veg or at least historically didnt.

Im not saying dont exercise either just ive been too bust the last three weeks to get some but the weight was still dropping off.

Ill get the video link tommorow as it too is very interesting.

You don't need loads of sweet potato and yams for endurance. I can run 10k + quite happily without them or any other carbs. I make a drink of 3 whole eggs, 2tbsp butter, 2 tbsp coconut oil mixed in a blender with 2 cups of hot water and flavoured with 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, wait an hour then run. No significant carbs the day before other than fibrous vegetables, never any starches/grains/fruit etc.

I didn't say you couldn't do it. But if your more concerned with performance, distance training is better on carbs - that was my point.

Hey mate looking at what sort of meals to be having...

Just been shopping and got cheese, bacon, sweeteners, lactose free milk, few steaks, eggs, chicken, oh and doesn't sweeteners effect ketosis as I too usually drink lots of pop but wouldn't wanna ruin it. So coke zero and Pepsi Max are OK ?

Could you give me a few tips on what to have for breakfast, lunch and tea and what do you snack on ? What about nuts ?

Your help would be great as I have been trying to get a list of what to and what not to eat and it seems I come to a dead end all time.

Cheers Rikki

Looks like you're on the money there.

Sweeteners do F-all to a ketosis diet, Im living proof. They also dont make you fat. Again if that was the case I wouldnt have plummeted over 2 stone in 8 weeks

Avocados, fresh fish, tuna, mince, Cumberland sausages (check carbs on em as they do have fillers/wheat but tiny amounts really), certain fat free / Weightwatchers foods and yogurts, beef frying steaks, corned beef ... Thats just a few but Im a simple eater so never really go mental looking for more and more stuff, I lived on Koka Noodles and lentil soup for long enough so food variety isnt big on my hit list :D

That plus the vending packs of Bovril with a nip of added salt helps plus omega 3s fish oil capsules, vitamin D capsules and if you want to magnesium caps too.

Best bet is google for Paleo diet menus and lists, then sub check them for carb levels and choose the lowest ones. Bar plain meat there is carbs in almost everything but you have a kitty of 50grams per day to play with,
