Parent house stinks of rat urine

Take a baseball bat to your Dad's head to learn him proper.

Then when he's down pull your pants off and wee all over him asking how he likes it.

Put the rat in a frying pan, turn the gas on and hold it near it screaming yum yum noises.

i hope you have tried all this

If he is using the cost as an excuse could you not buy him some sawdust/woodchip stuff and some cleaning products for him to use?
They can't be that expensive and hopefully he would get the message that you aren't keen on him not cleaning it out enough.

As mentioend, you shouldn't use saw dust with rats, they all have mild respiratory illness (which comes about from the breeding of domestic rats and is not a problem nor does it cause them discomfort etc) and as such you shouldn't use small particle bedding etc.

Shredded paper etc is fine for their bedding.

As for the use of cat litter, the house we have our rats in has trays below a slatted floor, which we put a small amount of odour neutralising cat litter in which helps to keep the smell at bay.

Also we clean them out fully at least once a week and the trays every couple of days cos they do quite a lot of pooing and when the urine gets on the poo, that is when it starts to smell!

I thought that at first when my girlfriend suggested them but having had three of the little thigns for the last few months I have to say they really are lovely pets.

They are really funny and love to play with all sorts of things (they wrestle too which is so sweet), they love company and if you've been out all day when you get back they all run out of their house to meet you and give you a good sniffing to see where you've been.

And the thing which was most surprising to me was how different their characters can be! We have three completely different ones, one who is hyperactive, always on the move and really brave, always the first to the door when we open the cage and great at gathering food for them all.

The second is a greedy little thing who moves as little as possible unless there is food then she is first there and wolfs down as much as she can.

The third is much more quiet and delicate, when she takes food from your hand there is no snatching, she just very gently picks it up and slowly wanders off with it., she also likes to keep the house clean and is always moving toys and things out of the house that the manic one puts in there.

They really are lovely.

FYI

Rats make perfect bird feed.

Down my lovely clean road was the body of a rat, guessing a cat or fox got it.

Morning came and after less than an hour the magpies and crows left no trace of it.
