Some of them are really soft or out of focus and yet some are really sharp. Its a bit odd

Some of them were taken automatic mode and some in personal, the camera is a DSC-W12 and I have had very mixed results using it. Reviews have often said this camera is too soft in automatic.

I really need to invest in a propper camrea...

I think that all the ones down from 3 are really good, great shots for a p&s, i think some would benifit with some processing ie colour adjustment. Good job
