I know! I shouldn't even think about taking the car but I'm in a pickle tomorrow and don't have much choice. I detest driving into Edinburgh especially at rush hour but I really have no other option.. I'd rather take a train but the times don't suit :(

I'm having dinner and meeting the girlfriend mother for the first time, going for dinner at a restaurant on the royal mile (GF hasn't informed me what it's called) and since I'll have to leave straight from work, drive through, park and find the hotel I was looking for tips on somewhere near the Royal Mile to leave the car. Any suggestions?

Has anyone tried the Park + Ride scheme?

I so don't want to be late..

It pretty expensive to park on the royal mile and there isnt many spaces. Id suggest parking at ocean terminal in Leith and then gettin a bus straight from there to royal mile. The buses are pretty regular and cheap!

Why don't you park in the multi car park thats behind the castle beside princes street. I parked there bout a month back for most of the day and wasn't expensive at all. Royal mile wasn't far either :)

I have driven into edinburgh twice with sat nav and still got massively lost in the city centre, the roads are unreal, all bizarre mixes of one ways, dead ends and bus only. We drove around for about 35 mins trying to find the hotel, every way we drove took us to a dead end. Just dont drive in end of, or get a hotel with parking. :)

No I'm not at a hotel, live about 30miles away so I'll be driving home. I might well end up leaving the car at the Sheraton where I stayed last week and walking. Once I'm told where the restaurant of course :p

What time will you be in town? If it's after 6.30, you will be able to park for free in the Grassmarket which is a short walk to the top of the royal mile. Of course, if it's the bottom (east) end then it's a long walk.

There is a park and ride just outside Heriot Watt, which will get you on a 34 or 25. These buses run late as they go to the uni and I'd assume even the later ones will go through the park and ride. To get to it, follow the M8 right to the end. Pull into the left hand lane when you see the first signs for the bypass, but keep going. When you get to the roundabout, you want to be in the 2nd left of 4 lanes (each lane splits into 2). Stay in that lane and as you go up the ramp, stick to the right. The place is visable after a right turn off the roundabout.

This is a map of where the buses go.

The multistory car park under the castle just down from grassmarket would be fine to park in I would imagine,

and as said about grassmarket would be ideal if you can get a space.

It costs a fortune though. On street parking after 6.30pm is free. I doubt very much that place lowers its rates, and it's like £3.50 for 2 hours.

Well GF just called me to say that she needs the car tomorrow we're getting "stuff" off her mum so i've no option now but to drive into edinburgh, going to a restaurant right at the end of the Royal mile it seems so might well get some parking around there, if not I'll just pay a fortune, who cares it's a free meal :D

cheers chaps!
