Part Worn Tyre Woes

Can't see any issues with part worn tyres personally. Well, I can, but I can see the other side of the argument too.

A few of my friends use part worn tyres on the various E36/E46 BMW's and they've never had a problem. They do always inspect the tyres to ensure they're free from repairs, and to ensure there's no bits gouged of the tread/sidewall. To date, none of them have suffered any form of catastrophic end of the world as we know it type failures with regards to tyres, nor have they reported back with any differences in braking ability, road holding, or comfort.

I can see why people are against them as they're of an unknown quality, and removed for unknown reasons, but I'd personally rather have my friends driving around on second-hand decent brand tyres with decent levels of tread, than them spend the same money and buy no brand wonders from manufacturer's the world has never heard of.

You kust not think very much as that was just an example. What about cars that die due to a rusty sill or wing or engine grenade or 10mph crash that crunched a bumper on a 1000 quid value Ford focus. There are l9ads 9f reasons why a car with perfectly usable tyres might get scrapped.

Yes because when i think of cars with rusty sills and 1k fords I also think of premium tyres worth buying secondhand.

The facts are some part worns will be ok, many wont, you have no idea what car they've come off, you have no idea why, you have no way of inspecting internal damage to the tyres structure.

For that reason alone part worns aren't worth the risk.

Did you not wonder why somebody would have taken a perfectly good near new Michelin tyre off a car in the first place?

This.

This thread just made me laugh because I've just realised I don't even keep cars long enough to wear the tyres out and change them lol

The fact that you even acknowledged that they are Michelin and bothered to even look at what had been fitted shows that you aren't the sort of person to be buying part worns.

Part worns are for people that buy a car for a couple of hundred quid, never service it and run it until it stops.

I buy part worns and haven't had an issue yet. My brother in law works at a scrap yard and i get mine through him.

car isn't anything special but I keep it serviced correctly. Not had an issue with a part worn yet.

The majority of part worns are taken off cars that have been crashed where he works, they are inspected at the more reputable places before being sold on.

now you may laugh at me :)

Would have been a cracking tyre if it didm't have the cut in it as tread depth is still 7mm.

If it didn't have a split in it it wouldn't have been up for sale.

My window cleaner a few years ago had blowout on motorway - Got done for drinking when cop's turned up - Next time I saw him he said I got two good second hand tyres from "Jacko's used tyres" - I never expected to get a blowout. duh!!! - I said doesn't "Jacko" ring any sort of bell.

Haven't read this whole thread but I got sold a dodgy part worn tyre, took the garage owner to court via trading standards and I got my money back plus he got fined about £11,000.
I remember that thread, excellent result for you :)
In this one, the OP knowingly bought a part-worn tyre :p

If I report this garage I doubt anything will happen. As already been said they will just say it was fine when they sold it. Hell they didn't even give me a receipt but they are clearly in the part worn business as the walls where racked in part worn tyres right to the roof.

They do participate in social media so I will spread the word around about their dodgyness.

I don't think that's fair. Had you bought a brand new Michelin tyre, perhaps you could stir some ****. But you knowingly bought a part-worn tyre.
It's your own fault.

They knowingly sold me a part worn tyre not fit for purpose.
In my opinion, no part-worn tyres are fit for purpose.
It's like buying a car sold as seen/spares or repairs for 50p and then complaining when it explodes 500 yards down the road.
Or buying an 'iPhone' off a ***** in the street for £50 only to discover it's a Chinese fake.

Take it on the chin and move on with your life.

No, they knowingly sold you a part-worn tyre that was priced as such and clearly hadn't been the subject of a detailed structural analysis.

The fact that this was clearly a cash-in-hand purchase, with no receipt nor paper-trail to me shows that this was a "favour".

Hopefully you'll see the error of your ways and not scrimp on your own (and other motorists') safety in the future.

Every car you buy private is sold as seen. Just check the tyre is ok, end of the day what is the difference from buying a tyre from a car that could possible be from someone buying alloys and selling the tyres on? You buy a second had car you have part worn tyres. Loads of people on here are on a very high horse, check for puncture repairs or any signs of uneven wear and what could possible go wrong? If its come off a crashed car you have to ask is it only because of a dodgy tyre? Many people crash because they don't asses the road correctly and are travelling too fast, or maybe somebody crashed into the back of you, your car is written off and sell the tyres on?

Nothing makes sense, so you buy a second hand car give it a through checking over buy it then replace all 4 tyres for new ones?? I highly doubt it.

I don't buy part worns, but can see a market for them. The OP should have checked they tyre prior to having it out on his car. Putting a tyre on a car with a chunk missing is never a good idea, if mine was like the OP it would get replaced.
