ok peeps - i need some seriously cheap tyres - only need to cover a max of 2000 miles befor giving in (and the car being crushed) so costing as little as possible is the order of the day.

I've tried phoneing up my friendly local tyre place and they don't do part worns, so is it just a case of phoneing around till i find someone who will, or shall i go with stupidly cheap ditch finders at £130 for 4?

(tyre size if 185/60 r14 btw)

What Car is it Sam?

You may be able to find a set of wheels inc. tyres or something for it on Ebay and then whack those on.

tis a possibility - its for a vw scirocco.... i'll have a nose about now :)

edit: just got a quote for £124 for 4 from a local place....

How about a breakers yard? Get a set of steelies?

I paid £50 fitted for 2 part-worn Conti's for the 214. They were excellent tyres for the price. Loads of tread left too.

Go to the scrap yard, my cousin used to allways get his wheels, charged about £5 a corner. (these were for a 1988 Mazda 323 1.5 about 4 years ago)

again is an option - although i've just found a place on ebay that does 4 decent brand part worns for £60 delivered.... and i have a mate that can fit and ballance them for us :) gonna pop into the local brakers thou

edit: anyone know what other cars would have the same wheel size offset etc?

If you've got the time to have a hunt around on ebay that might be a good option.

I bought a set of alloys for £100, I got 12k out of the soft fronts (were about 20% worn) and after 13k I've still got the rears with loads of tread left. If I were to sell them without tyres or with bald ones I think I could still see £50 for them. Compare that to £102 for a PAIR of new tyres and you can see that you could be on to a winner.

Same size as the MR2, you could always try signing up on IMOC and asking in the mk1 forum if anyone local has any they don't need anymore. If you were a bit nearer I'd probably be able to sort you out with some myself although I just this week promised the spares I have lying around to someone from work who want to use them for drifting his MX5.

I'd look in the yellow pages for a tyre fitter in the worst part of town you can find and give them a ring. I went to a dodgey little indian garage in Southampton and paid £10 a corner for some 185/55 14 (think that was the size). I've had a good 5 thousand miles or so out of them so far.

Assuming you have 4*100 PCD (my database doesn't include the scirrocco but most VWs of that era appear to be) then
anything below has the same stud pattern and centre bore as well as an offset in the right ballpark:

BMW MINI (new)
SEAT Arosa, Cordoba, Ibiza, Inca, Toleda
SKODA Felicia, Favorit, Forman, Pick-up
VOLKSWAGEN Corrado, Golf, Lupo, Jetta, Passat >96, Polo, Vento

Then you've got the following with slightly larger centre bores which you might be able to make fit:

NISSAN 100NX, Almera, Micra, Sunny
SUBARU Justy >95, Vivio
RENAULT Clio, Megane, Laguna, R19, R21, Espace

cheers for the heads up - someone is giving some away on the forums, but they are a little far away for me, so i've pm's asking if he doesn't mind me getting them couriored down :)

and cheers for the list of sizes :)

I'd have still let you have the tyres! :p

The wheels aren't any good to you anyway as the MR2 centre bore is too small.

Isn't there any smaller independent 'under the arches' tyre places near you? The ones near me do part worns of all descriptions for around £25 upwards.
