Passed my driving test this last Thursday (first time with 3 minors) and have been having lots of fun driving everywhere!

But I thought I would post on here for your collective advice on what not to do or things that drivers do that annoy you! Trying to avoid an accident or annoying other drivers really

Assume someones going to do something daft, like change lanes last minute on a roundabout. That way, when they do, you'll be prepared.

What ever you do when someone cuts you up or does something you dont like don't express your anger at them, learnt that the hard way (they come after you  )

Expect all owners of BMW's, Audi's etc never to use indicators and to intimidate you also make sudden lane changes. Not saying they all do a bit stereotypical really but its true. I should know my dads one  And what ever you do don't even think about entering "their" lane on the motorway

rant off
feel better now :D

Well firstly congrats on passing, its one of the best feelings there are.

As for stuff to look out for, as tempting as it is to get carried away, acknowladge the fact that you dont know everything, and you still have a lot to learn. (As do I :D)

But you have done the hard part, you have passed the test, now its just a case of learning to anticipate and predict what the people around you are going to do and the mistakes that they are going to make.

Above all, take it easy and enjoy it. ;)

Well done on passing!

Just keep a 3rd eye on the lookout for bikes, being a biker myself i know first hand how annoying car drivers can be, but i have to confess that in traffic tonight on the way home 2 bikes caught me out and I only knew they were there once they were passing me through the traffic!

Just take it easy, we all know you will open it up at least once just to see what it will do, but dont make a habit of it and just take care :)

If something happens on the road (and things do happen) don't dwell on it - concentrate or you could make a serious mistake!

Always be able to stop in the distance you can see clear ahead of you.

Speed cameras are obvious and generally in places where I'd rather you didn't speed.

"services" are a con

Wear a seatbelt :)

Biggest thing when driving, check your blind spots. The first day I drove after my test was in my first car and I pulled from the inside lane to the outside lane on a dual carriageway and nearly sideswiped another car. You are just learning to drive so take it easy. There's plenty of time. Act like it.

drive with confidence, but dont be over confident (confidence comes in time) dont be scared on motorways etc. be wary of others, but have faith that people will stick to their lane, and relax, dont tense up. Dont try to hard when driving at night, dont blindly follow the rear lights of the car in front, or stare at the road markings, both will make your head spin ... have the confidence in yourself, and use the force !!

well done get your pass plus quickly as its equal to a years driving experience !!!!!

Please please watch out for motorbikes, especially kids on scooters.

Only yesterday i saw a woman pull out and hit a kid on a scooter, he even had his lights on!

Thankfully he was ok, the woman hit the bike not his leg

very true they try to go to hardcore for them and take risks !!!! esp when turning at junctions

Always assume that anyone is actively trying to kill you.

Most importantly:

If on a motorway, keep left unless overtaking..

*n

Stick to the speed limits in all areas except the motorway. Cameras are hiding everywhere nowadays :(

Don't prat around in the car, especially when you have other people in it with you. The feeling of knowing you've killed 2/3 innocent people, but your still alive can't be nice.

ALWAYS check your blind spot!! Especially on the motorway. My visit on the motorway nearly ended in tragedy when I was about to over take a tonka truck on a 2 laned motorway. Check'd my mirrors and it was clear, so went to move out, and to my horror I saw the bonnet of a fiesta very close to me.................nearly took the side out of the car :(

People say you learn things the hard way, and this when you start learning now........no driving instructor sitting next to you!!!

A week after I passed my test, I had a saxo boy on my bumper down the motorway........flashing his lights........the motorway was clear it was about 10pm at night. He wanted a race, and I was extremely tempted but then thought "I want to go home tonight..........and not kill myself" and carried on at 75Mph.

Don't drink and drive.................even when people say "Oh you'll be alright" is it their license that is under threat???

Very true but also don't take the urine. I see people who pull into the middle lane to overtake a lorry and pull straight into the left again even though there is another lorry a few hundred yards ahead. That's perfectly OK but when you're choosing to travel at ~80mph it's stupid, especially when there is no traffic behind you. It's perfectly OK to sit in the middle/outside lane if there is no traffic behind you and you anticipate you will overtake traffic ahead in a reasonable amount of time. It's all down to judgement, something you will develop over time.

Now you can learn to go down the gears properly :) No more rolling up to a line in 5th at 10mph.

What? Do they teach that these days?

I was taught to work down through the gears - stopping at lights would have meant working down to second. Come to think of the car would probably have stalled at < 20mph in 5th.
