Its my 30th in october 2014 and for 2015, and am thinking about going to Island lake lodge in Fernie and doing a Catskiing tour? A guided powder skiing tour (2,3,4 days) where a snow cat takes you up the mountain. Lodges look like they are in the middle of no-where.

Price! ...

A 4 day tour with accom, all food and transport when there is $3800 canadia. So about £2400, plus the flights, internal flight if needed and skiing 2 weeks in canada with lift passes etc maybe £5000 or £6000

I did Whistler/Blackcomb for my 21st which was fantastic but a powder tour looks out of this world. Looks like no ski lifts and no vast amount of tourists. Just 3 or 4 lodges, maybe 50 people max

Other than going into space I cant really think of anything else I would like to do

The only downside is that the weather may be bad, but saying that it it doesnt look as if it has never been bad or low snow. There is currently 10 feet of snow

I havent but could save - It is expensive (IMO) but will be worth it. I usually pay ~£1200 for France for a week with accom, ski hire, lift passes and spending money

It's a pat on the back for yourself for not having died by the age of 30, very expensive if you ask me but since you're clearly wanting our encouragement to go for it.

Don't do it, give it to charity, think of the children...

I've been up to Island Lake Lodge in the summer season to go walking. Would be ace to be up there in the winter - do it! :D

I would go to Chatter Creek or Retallack if it were my choice, more snow (if that's possible) and fewer punters.

I think cat/heli skiing places based around big resorts like Whistler and Fernie are undoubtably great but they will be more commercial operations. The more remote operations seem to be in more remote (d'uh) locations and cater for diehards rather than tourists.

A much cheaper way to get much of the same experience is to do some guided backcountry touring. You do much fewer runs per day, 4 or 5 vs 8 or 9, but you really earn them and it's great feeling totally out there in the wilderness.

I've got my first cat skiing day coming up in a few weeks and I cannot wait. Fingers crossed for more snow than Zeus.

Why, do you know me or is that a generalisation?

Not encouragement, more recommendations as other have posted

But you don't actually ask for recommendations at any point from what I can see, it's purely a "here's what I'm thinking of doing and I can't think of anything else."

Sorry if I missed your point, but it does seem like a bit of a cool-story-bro thread where someone has rambled without getting to the point or asking a question.

I thought you was referring to a cat that lived in snowy terrain, when you said 'snow cat'. Disappointed.

you can buy a lot of hookers and coke for that money to celebrate a birthday with, just sayin'

On a serious note, go travelling, it'll totally change your perspective on life.

Yes, its really a 'cool story bro' thread. Asking if people think its worth paying a lot of money (to me) which I dont have to ski with my parents on my 30th birthday
