i know this seems a silly question but ive only ever seen people pay by credit car.. you can just hand over the payment in cash, yes? more specifically thistle hotel in london ;)

Probably.....

But you will need a CC in order to book a room. They don't always take payment first, so best to check.

Normally they use the CC as a holding deposit and you pay on checkout.

yes you can but the hotel WILL want a swipe of a credit card when you check in to secure the room (and the contents of the mini bar plus your bar tab and evening meal) against.

Paul

Hotels, like the people have said will 9/10 times want a CC to swipe incase you do a runner...

B&B's on the other hand will take cash without a CC swipe :)

I seem to remember doing it last time I was in Edinburgh, as far as I remember I just paid upfront, and left a deposit to cover the bar/phone/etc. Got the deposit back afterwards.

They don't like you to pay in cash, In case your a ***** and invite 300 or so of your ***** mates back to stay and trash the place in a manner that 300 ****** would.

Used to work in a hotel here in York. ****** would arrive when the racing is on and ask if you've got any rooms left. Wanna pay cash and their always called Mr Smith !

Errr Computer says no Mr Smith !

I always thought you need a credit card to book in. They swipe your card and take out a deposit. They last one I went to took £200/day deposit.

I stayed in hotel last weekend and to pay by cash you needed ID, passport or credit card!

From another hotels t&c's said:
Customers paying with cash are required to provide identification on check-in. Acceptable forms of ID are: Current Driving Licence, ID Card, Passport, (must have photo identity) Credit or Debit Card, recent utility bill or bank statement.

Yeh I always thought they had to by law get some form of ID from you. Cards obviously have that included. But if cash in my experience it's always been passport (defo when overseas). It's so the government know where you are.......

I've stayed in (UK) hotels where you could pay with cash without any credit card / driver's licence shenanigans, it varies from place to place. Most like to take a swipe of a card in case you run up a massive room service bill and then do a runner, others stamp your room card thingy differently to indicate if you can or cannot charge things to your room.

I used to pay in cash before I was 18. As stated though, they need firm proof of identity. I used to hand over my passport which they would take a photocopy of.
