PC Dead after another mobo...

The mobo doesn't have onboard gfx, when trying it with no gpu still nothing happens.

Its just weird that the fans spin properly when I don't have the 6pin power to the mobo

Dont really know what to suggest, what are your specs, sorry if ive missed them.

If i had some spare parts to lend you to test with i would do. Have you tried different memory?

My brother found me out a spare GFX Card and PSU, PSU is a Hiper 500W, not the best but it's been solid in the past. Here's where it gets weird again...

I plugged the GPU in etc, all cables etc, pressed the power button, their was a spark and bank and some smoke. No idea where it came from at all but everything seems to be working fine.

What would have caused the sparking/banging?

Possibly the PSU.

My thoughts are that maybe something in your system was unstable, and the good PSU prevented the system from starting, and when you used the cheap PSU, it didnt prevent the system from starting, and the unstable component blew instead.

But my PSU worked in my brothers PC fine using the 4pin power to mobo header whereas when I used the 6pin mobo power header in my PC it wouldn't boot at all.

My guess is the 6pin line on the PSU is faulty?

And with me seeing the spark/bang etc and everything still working fine, is it safe to say it would remain that way?

Cheers

6 pin power header? AFAIK most PSUs have a 4+4 pin and 24 pin ATX power connectors for the a mobo, the 6 pin and 6+2 pin PCI-E connectors are for graphics cards.

Sorry, I meant 8-pin(4+4pin). My heads not with it today after all this hassle.

Maybe the bang/smoke was just a short circuit?

NP, from my experience I would guesstimate that it is either an unstable rail on the PSU or dodgy component on the mobo. In regards to finding out where the bang/smoke came from, you could try using your nose, as if it is a faulty component that as decided to burn you can sometimes locate it by how it smells.

Yeah think I'll give that a go. But as everything is working fine that's got to be a good sign right?

Cheers

6 pin power header? it should be either a 4 pin or an 8 pin for the CPU... Have you plugged the PCI-E power into the CPU power header, and the CPU power into the PCI-E header..? :p

There is an 8 pin for the CPU and an 8 pin for the GPU. Make sure they are in the right places when you use your branded PSU. A friend of mine made that mistake before, it prevented his system from firing up. It would also explain why the fans etc spin up when the CPU power is unplugged.

The powering on for a few seconds thing reminded me of a similar issue I've had before, where one of the memory modules was to blame.

Try taking one out and powering on, do it for both (or however many you have installed)

I looked again this morning guys quite a few times and I still can't locate where the bank/smell/smoke came from. Everything seems fine.

I just had a thought, on my mobo the 4+4pin header used an extender and I think it could have been that where the smoke came from because I remember it comming from around that area.

I removed it since and as I said before everything seems perfect. Maybe I got a lucky escape?

Cheers

So guys what should I do? Is their a chance something else could die because of what happened with the pop/smoke in the future?

I've looked all over the mobo and can't see any signs of damage.
