Did a BIOS flash on my PC ( HP machine with ASUS m/b )

It seemed to go ok, rebooted into windows and after a few mins powered down

It now won't power up

Just checking that it will probably need a new motherboard as normally when a BIOS flash goes wrong it dies at first boot

Cheers

You've tried clearing the CMOS right?

Always worth trying a differnt PSU just on the offchance too.

done a CMOS clear, thought of the PSU as it has a LED on it that was flashing instead of solid , followed a tribleshooting thing on HP website which concluded that it was not the PSU ( you unpug all connectors and if light goes solid then it says it is unlikely to be PSU )

would have tried another PSU but all my spare ones have a different connector, been out of PC hardware for a couple of years but thought most were the same , the one on my machine has a longer main connector than all the others I have

How long have you done the CMOS clear for mate? I've had boards that have required 12+ hour clear. I recommend pulling all power connectors from the board, pulling cmos battery and setting jumper to clear.

Then reverse order after a night sleep, and try in the morning.

You mean it has 24 pins and not 20?

24 sounds about right :)

will try leaving cmos overnight :)

re the cmos clear, going back (a long long time ago) it took about an hour+ of the cmos being disconnected from it's battery for it to clear on one of the machines I was trying to sort out (a 486, with a soldered battery).

I don't think the bios flash could have killed the motherboard, but it may have changed one of the settings for something like the ram to a default voltage that might cause a problem.

Incredibly silly question, have you tried it sans one stick of ram then the other?

When you clear the bios (with the battery out) press the power on button a couple of times to 'empty' the capacitors too. Also, load optimised defaults and check voltages etc after cmos clear. good luck.

Quick update folks

turns out it was the PSU ( after I had a motherboard shipped from China  )

this is despite following some manufacturers checks which determined it was unlikely to be the PSU

looks like the BIOS flash was just coincidence then

thanks for your help folks
