pc or not to pc

Current consoles are out of date imo but Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony will milk the current consoles before they release anything new.

What they need to do is make their consoles upgradable and future proof them for a few years longer and maintain the game play.

I seem to remember the first Xbox being touted as upgradeable, though nothing ever came of it.

Optional upgrades gives too many options and no set hardware basis for game development, which they seem to like to much at the moment

I got a PS3 this year and aside from FIFA10 I've hardly played on it. I can understand people ditching consoles in favour of PC due to lack of games, but not the other way round - PC has the biggest backcatalogue going!

And the best - cRPGs, RTSs, TBSs, simulators, indie, old school, freeware, mods, etc.

Always the latest technology but can also play games that are 30 years old. Emulators as well.

Both got their good and bad sides.

As much as most of you might bring up arguments such as hardware difference and better graphics there is this SOMETHING about consoles that still makes them stand out.

I still remember the days when we'd meet up together with friends and take turns on oldschool PS1 games or just play multiplayer on 2/4 pads.

You could say that you can just play over the net on PC but it's not the same as just having few of your mates coming around and just plug n play your fav games.

I think that we might be heading towards streaming gaming,
streaming gaming is already here i think the service is called "onlive"
As to whether to get a PS 3 or not it really depends on the type of game you want to play Fifa and PES are both better on console and yes Forza and GT are very good sims but so is the cm stuff on PC. Consoles are good for sports/fighting games because PC's aint great for local multiplayer everything else the pc does better. MvsC 3 might be a reason to buy a console on it's own for some people.

non of the codemasters stuff is that good imo, i hated grid it didnt really have that much content , dirt 2 is pretty average and f1 2010 was nothing but a massive let down...

the only thing we have that can be compared at all to GT/forza is shift and that whilst looking pretty fantastic even to this day is only a shadow of the content of forza/GT

maybe shift 2 will be more like them but i dont dare get my hopes up

You name almost any PS3 game which the owners tell you is great etc etc I guarantee you there is a PC equivalent which will look better & is much cheaper to buy ;)

Metal Gear Solid 4, Llittle Big Planet, Uncharted, just off the top of my head. I can't think of any games for the PC which compare favourably to those, in their relative genres, and have been released recently. Couple that with the fact that you can now buy each of the above for under a tenner, and you're going to struggle for "cheaper" as well.

I have both a PS3 and a PC, and they get about an equal amount of play time. To say that most PS3 games are shallow is ridiculous; most modern PC games are just as shallow. Which was the last PC game's storyline which truly grabbed you? For me it was Bioshock, which wasn't exclusive to the PC.

The PC is an excellent system for strategy games, MMOs, and FPS games. The PS3 is excellent for just about everything else

technology/performnafe wise

PC >>>>>>>> CONSOLES

for gaming experience -f or me anyway

360>PS3>PC

I love my PC - but 90% of multiplayer gaming I do on my 360 these days - why if graphics aren't as good ? well multiplayer just seems to work better on the 360 over live, friends lists across all games, most using headsets etc - far better experience

I sometimes doubt why I bother every year or 18 months spending good portion of 200 on a new graphics card to keep relatively current - well partially its as I like some of the more PC centric games like Arma 2, FSX etc - but in relatively small doses

most of the time I'm just playing Black Ops on the 360 :)

thanks for the response and theres some mixed reviews there.so i am going to borrow one from my brothers friend and rent a few games out for tonight. Will report back.At least it will only cost a few quid if i dont like it.

From my point of view neither console can be better than the PC. I own both an Xbox 360 and a Playstation 3, I can stick to them for a few days but then I just get bored and before I know it I'm back on Counter Strike doing the same things I've been doing for six years.

I hate how communication is much more difficult, to some people it wont be if they've bought one of those mini-keyboards that clip onto a controller, but I'm not wasting my money on one of those.

Gran Turismo 5 kept me occupied for four days, I hardly touched my PC during that time, but now I'm fed up of that and I'm back to playing Counter Strike again.

My Xbox 360 broke, and I can't fix it easily like I can if my PC breaks. If my PS3 breaks then it's going to be the same as the Xbox.

For me there are so many ways in which a PC is better than a console.

I've got a Pc, Ps3 and 360 and appreciate the best things each system has to offer. I must admit though I've hardly touched the consoles these past couple of months since upgrading my gpu and have really gotten back into PC gaming in a big way. I wouldn't give up your PC so to speak because its guaranteed at some point there will be a game that comes out that is PC only you will want. If you can afford it buy a Ps3 as well if you really want one.

just get both? why ditch one for another? theres no competition here, consoles should complement pcs.
i have ps3, 360 and pc....play on pc most of the time.

if your getting a ps3 just for gt5 youd be disappointed especially since forza is the better game overall, and gt5 graphics arent all that - dont be fooled by the advert floaing around at the moment.

Well as my testimony i grew up on a mixture of PC gaming and consoles, starting with an acorn and sega mega drive.

Teen years i played predominately PC games, though the irony is i rarely if ever actually purchased games because they were so easy to download, crack and play for free. Not proud of it, but thats how it was.

Now, the only games i play on the PC are free to download or platform specfic. Even though i knew going into it Dragon Age played better on the PC i bought it on my xbox. The Mass Effect games look stunning on a PC render, i played them on the xbox.

Why?

PC Gaming requires being sequestered away from society in a room, by yourself, probably with the lights off. Hunched up to a computer monitor with a mouse and keyboard is less comfortable than crashing on the sofa with a game pad and 46 inch TV. If i completed a marathon play through of dragon age on the PC, i would have zero interactions with my other half the entire day. Playing on the xbox, in the lounge, she can come and go, watch, dont watch, be a part of the experience, and ultimately, kick me off when is reasonable so she/we can get use of the lounge TV :)

So for me, it all comes down to the social practicality. PC Gaming implies a greater degree of isolation

People go on about the plug n play nature of consoles, but turning one on, waiting for it to load, getting my controller ready... this takes longer than just double clicking an icon on my desktop.

Configuring games to work? Apart from selecting graphics options and maybe some keybindings the first time I install a game, I never have to do anything other than play.

Only if you have your pc in a study or similarly sanctioned room.

My pc is in my lounge, next to the sofa. I can play whatever and interact with my gf while she watches telly. I can push the pc through to my plasma, grab the wireless controllers and challenge her to some split-screen racing. She can plug her laptop in to the telly and join me for some time in LOTRO.

Gaming is as social as you make it.

Well I much prefer my PC, playing ALL games at 1920x1080 with anti-aliasing and and smooth frame rates is a joy compared to my PS3.

I have my PlayStation 3 hooked up to a full HD 40" Bravia and the graphics are pants. Jaggies galore, crap 30 FPS or lower on many games, and poor resolutions make it hard to go back to.

Games like Uncharted 1&2 make me dust it off and the occasional bout of Super Street Fighter IV (I still hope this comes to PC as SF4 looks so much better on PC)
