Took my daughters PC to work to reinstall the OS. Everything tickety-boo.

On the way home I had to brake a bit harder than i usually would after somebody pulls out, and the PC slid off of the rear seat onto the floor.

The CPU cooler came off, but when i got home i reattached it & checked that everything was seated correctly.

However now when you power it on it displays BIOS stright away & won't boot into the OS. As soon as you exit BIOS the machine shuts down. I've tried using default settings & even removed the battery to clear the CMOS but still the same.

I've removed all devices bar the HDD, G.card & 1 stick of RAM but still the same.

I take it that something's probably borked? Maybe the mobo? If it was the HDD it would still show the POST & it doesn't.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Scott

take it the cooler coming off didnt cause any damage to the mobo ?

it depends how hard the knock from the fall was on the hd, fair chance its totally u/s imho.

Tried another HDD still wouldn't boot.

Reset the CMOS & it boot.

Put the old drive it, started to boot Windows then turned off.

Now i am confused

Another odd thing is when it does shut itself down, it won't power on again until you kill the mains & then it's fine.

Just tried again & it's shut down halfway through booting Windows.

Maybe the HDD's not completed dead but damaged by the knock? Can't think of what else it might be?

[EDIT: Just tried a third HDD & it also reboots or shuts down after the POST. Starting to think mobo or CPU now :(

do you have a spare pwoersupply to try? it may be that the power supply is partialy borked, still supplying enough juice for bios but not anything more...

yeah I would say try another PSU if you can, else as mentioned check the capacitors etc are all ok, something must have been knocked off considering the fan came off :(

Thanks for the suggestions....but i've manage to fix it :D

Took the CPU cooler off & whipped the CPU out to check the pins & condition of the core etc. Reseated it all & it's been fine since. Maybe something wasn't quite seated properly when the cooler decided to abadon ship.

Happy bunny now, cheers anyway :)
