PC to HDTV - which cables?

I'm going to be buying a new TV today or tomorrow and I think it's going to be the Toshiba 32AV615DB.

I guess I'll get the ball rolling by asking if this is a good choice?

The thing that's going to matter the most to me is the ability to connect my PC to the TV. Only problem is that I'm not quite sure what cables I should be buying. Should I be looking for a DVI to HDMI converter and then buying a standard HDMI cable? As for the audio, would a "3.5MM Stereo Jack To 2 x Phono RCA Cable" be suitable?

I also read that it doesn't matter if you buy a cheapo HDMI cable. Would I be safe to just buy one from the bay then?

Or am I completely mad and going to order the wrong stuff? :D

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

thats how i've connected mine even though i could send the audio through the hdmi cable using the ati card but the quality was pretty poor.

just check the t.v's connections to make sure it supports them before buying....also best to check out a few reviews of the t.v before purchasing.
i bought a toshiba lcd first and took it back the very next day it was so bad but it wasnt an expensive model and i suppose you get what you pay for.

oh and cheap hdmi cables are deffo what you want.

sorry i should have pointed out you can buy dvi to hdmi cables.....no need for a separate converter and hdmi cable

ive got my panasonic plasma connected via a dvi to hdmi cable, it's a genuine monster cable from the bay, got it for about £7 :) and audio is running a 3.5 stereo jack from my audigy card to 2 phono jacks on the amp, cable was also a few pounds off the net :)

Thanks for the help guys.

Had a quick look for some reviews on the Toshiba and it's generally good feedback. Only problems I've read are that it doesn't support 1080p (which shouldn't matter too much at 32", right?) and that the blacks "could be a little more solid".

Here is a picture of the DVI to HDMI cable. This would be fine for linking my 8800GT to the TV then? Clicky.

Think I've got the audio sorted out and I'll just buy a cheap HDMI cable for my 360.

Looks fine, how much are you paying for the tv btw ?

£300. I'm not very familiar with the TV market so it's either this or a cheaper Foehn & Hirsch model. That is of course unless you know of anything better for the same price? :p

you could get a dvi to hdmi adapter and use a normal lead, or you could get a dvi to hdmi lead, or go old skool and get a dvi to vga adapter!

Just bought the TV and all the appropriate leads. Thanks for the help guys and I'll be sure to report back with the results! :D

I am not sure if this will apply to your TV but my Samsung 5 Series won't accept 3.5 jack audio if you go DVI -> HDMI. My TV expects both audio and video to come via the HMDI cable.

Also, the TV will only display at it's native resolution using VGA. Again I'm not sure if this is something that will affect you.

I've got the TV and all the cables.

Aesthetically, it's superb. It really is very sleek and stylish. It's great with my 360 and I also get a good picture when using my PC. Unfortunately, the picture isn't amazing when watching freeview. It seems a bit blocky at times. The sound isn't as good as it was on my last tv, but it's alright.

Overall, you get what you pay for. I think you could do a lot worse with £300.

It turns out that I bought the wrong cable for the audio. wozencl was correct, my tv wouldn't pick up the sound whilst my PC was running through HDMI. However, I only just noticed the TV has a "PC/HDMI audio" jack.

Would I just have to connect a 3.5mm jack from my soundcard?

you only need the DVI to HDMI converter if you really need to use the HDMI port, the picture quality is exactly the same.

a lot of people do not realise that HDMI is just DVI but with added HD audio capabilities.

I use the HDMI ports on my TV for my 360 & Blu Ray player and the DVI for my laptop/PC.

ATI cards that are HD enabled... come with a DVI-HDMI adaptor which allows the transfer of sound via the HDMI cable. Other DVI-HDMI adaptors don't do that.. I have tried a few and they only allow video to pass through.
