PC turning off (powering off) randomly? But can't find why... tested a few things...

Have you give it a hoover inside, Ive been to fix lots of pcs what suddenly turn off. when having a look i found the heatsinks where full of dust and not letting the cpu breathe. also make sure the cpu fan is spinning because they can go to. if the pc reaches a certain temp it will auto shut down for safety. you can monitor temps in bios too

The temps are fine. The stange thing is if I reseat the stick of RAM, it tends to work OK for a while, then goes awry again. I'm thinking that something is faulty be it the RAM, the RAM slots or the memory controller.

Pretty odd times.

I gave up with mine, couldn't get it to work for love nor money, all I can guess is the mobo is dead somehow, sata/ide controller... so sold the base unit for 30 quid as couldn't be bothered to strip it for bits.

Oh well, thats the first one I've never been able to suss out eventually!

I blame it on the emachines logo lol, was an MSI motherboard - certainly odd behaviour, I got it to do a full system restore from the stored hard drive partition and it completed fully which was weird so thought woop sorted it, it finished its install and all the drivers/programs it came bundled with and then I restarted it and boom, kept turning off again when loading windows. I hadn't put it on the net.

The powering off issue occured with new RAM, PSU, Hard Drive, different DVD drives, machine stripped down as much as poss with no hard drive connected and any CD drive be it IDE or SATA, as soon as it got to Windows 7 setup screen it turned off.

Couldn't understand why it ram memtest and seatools for hours with no issues though.

Win some lose some.

i would check your mobo specs online and note the memory fequency it supports, check to see it supports the ram your using as it sounds to me like it either doesnt or your ram is faulty. also check your cpu spec to see if it supports the memory frequency your using
