ok so as of the last couple months my PC which i bought from OCUK has been randomly turning itself off... like total instant shut down. trying to turn it back on is very tricky, and totally random, sometimes unplugging it from the wall and then plugging it back in will jolt it into life but that is rare. the only sign that the PC is getting some power is the little LED on the motherboard..other than that its stone cold. ive tried everything i can think off, different power cables, different plug sockets etc etc. is this a PSU issue or is there something else going on???

also after these total blackouts if it did eventually turn back on the OCUK overclock profile would be turned off and my bios would revert to using default speeds :(

my specs

Intel Core i7 960 3.20GHz @ 4.00GHz Quad Core
GTX 570 OC
6GB RAM
Corsair TX650W PSU

i dont have much choice other than to buy a new PSU and see if that works:(

Did you buy from OcUK pre-assembled? Can you not return the whole system to them under warranty? Also, what motherboard do you have? I wouldn't buy anything just yet until we can eliminate a few obvious possibilities.

Moody89 yes i bought the system from overclockers but i believe it was a 1 year warranty and since i bought it in oct 2010 its technically over... unless of course OCUK take pity on me :(

checked this link Engram and this section pretty much sums up what ive been going through.

"Not all problems are related to a failed or faulty PSU, but it’s best to eliminate the PSU when making your diagnosis.

Symptoms of a failed PSU include:

- No power to the System

- Periodically turns off

- Random re-boots meaning that the PSU is not providing enough power to keep it going"

Almost certainly a dead psu. Waiting on my new one tomorrow so know where you are bro. Do you have access to a multi meter? Have you tried jumpstarting the psu to see if you can isolate it as the problem?

Yeah you could try the 'paper clip' trick to start the PSU without the mobo connector connected and see what happens?

Google PSU paper clip trick or search forum.

i might give that a go actually.... the fact that the mobo LED does still work annoys me, id rather have a VERY clearly dead PSU than one that is merely faulty.

Another thing to check is connections everywhere. Try reseating your gfx card then check all connectors. I had a loose case fan connector, which was enough to keep killing the comp, making it look like it was psu related but soon as I found the loose cable, problem solved.

Good luck bud.
