good evening...

anyone recommend a sound-card that has an optical out, main use for gaming / films... optical out needed for hook up to samsung 5.1, other than that will be used mainly with headphones (pc 350's) n occasional 2.1 speakers.

budget of around £80 ...

seems to be one of these:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Creative Sound Blaster Recon3D Fatal1ty Professional Soundcard - Retail (70SB135600001) £89.99
1 x Asus Xonar D2X 7.1 PCI-E Sound Card £84.98
1 x Creative Sound Blaster Recon3D PCI-E Soundcard - Retail (70SB135000002) £79.99

please and thank you :-)

In all fairness, since I've switched to PAX drivers (3rd party drivers for creative) I can't say I've had any issues but I also can't say I had many problems with the original drivers.

It's a shame it takes Creative a few years to update them though! It certainly took them long enough to update drivers when Vista came out.

The Recon3D's aren't that good from what I've read so I would probably avoid those but that's not based on my user experience so feel free to google some reviews.

As above, I would go with a D2X if it was me.

Windows 8 drivers are an issue though. There are none for the Xonar but beta's for the Recon3D.

Worth mentioning as Windows 8 is out later this year and Asus haven't updated the D2X drivers since 2011.
