with petrol prices going up again last week or so, am looking to start cycling into work :-)

have bought some new tyres, inner tubes and chain all fitted and good.

Some minor problems, the gear shifters don't always change gear especially when trying to get onto the larger sprockets at the back.

some pictures here of kit on the bike :-

basically pushing the lever to change gear has no resistance and other times it does, is this fixable?

TIA

For the gears you can follow guides online (there are loads on youtube) or take it to your local bike shop.

It sounds like you just need to adjust the cable tension though, so might be worth having a bash yourself.

Also make sure the brakes are working!

Nah bud thats only if you buy a bike from Halfords in Airdrie.

I don't like slime tubes, I'd rather stop the puncture happening in the first place with a tyre liner or a decent tyre like a schwalbe plus series with the extra layer built intot he tread.

A 5p increase in fuel makes a £2.50 difference over a full tank in my car. How much have you spent so far? ;)

Anyway, sarcastic comment out of the way I quite enjoyed my time biking to work, I just didn't enjoy people overtaking me on blind bends so I packed it in before I was the catalyst for a nasty accident.

Often replacing the cables (inner and outer) can improve gear shifting, it's only a steel cable in a steel outer, and eventually they corrode and get cack in them, so they end up with loads of friction. Either try and run lots of WD40 or GT85 inside the cable, or get a replacement set - they aren't too expensive.

Slime filled tubes are only good for low pressure. Consider Specialized Armadillo tyres if you really don't want punctures. I have them and have ridden over 3500 miles and gone through glass etc with absolutely no problem.
