I do wonder about some people...

Ok...Fair enough the "new road layout" could potentially be accepted as the cause of a genuine mistake but then I saw this:

"15 miles.... past SEVEN junctions" ... " '...there was nowhere to turn around so I just kept going' "!!!!

What did she think she was doing? And where did she think she was going?!

I do feel for her, the fact she made a mistake and ended up going the wrong way but surely any right-minded person would have pulled over as soon as they realised (seeing as she'd have entered close to or on the hard shoulder...) or at the very least pull off at one of the junctions?!

Some people loose all - and I mean ALL - common sense when faced with such situations. Just like with faults that cause a car to go "run-away", FFS turn it off.

Ah, but there has been a case of a 17 y/o male doing this, shortly after passing his test, and there were no roadworks/new road layouts to blame.

These sorts of people often seem to drive strange little cars too - this one in a Suzuki Ignis (never even heard of it before), and that woman a few months back who refused to drive fast on the motorway in her Perodua thing.

I hope she got a alcohol test. Just because she's 81 doesn't mean she wasn't drunk :p

Surely you can't be that stupid keep going if it was a genuine mistake?

I don't know what's more worrying, that she did it or that it took 15 miles before anyone moved off their bottom and did something. At 40mph that about 25 minuites at least.

Instant permanent ban.

I agree. And I would like to see her charged with dangerous driving too, seeing as she caused an accident which landed people in hospital.

Retest at 65 and every year after please. I'm not saying that every older driver is dangerous, there are plenty of over 65 drivers that are safer than young drivers, but it's just a fact that eyesight and reaction times etc do decline with age.

'Nowhere to turn around' .... how about stop? Her insurance company is going to love her, sounds like she wrote of a few cars in the process.

Retests for all over 35?

Eyesight, reaction times and general mental awareness doesn't degrade at 35 like it does when people get to 65+.

Yes, people of all ages do stupid things on the roads, I'm not denying that. I'm merely saying that the physical effects of age do take their toll, and as such some sort of retest (not neciserrily the full test like you take at 17) would be a good idea.
