Pentax K100D any good?

the usual advice still holds true - go to a shop & try handling them, it's important to be comfortable.
There are no genuinely bad DSLRs only good & better.

The K100D can be bought for £270 new. :)

Yes, even in Jessops it's £299 with the kit lens, so I'd be reluctant to buy a refurb unless it has a full warranty.

I bought mine because I already had some Pentax kit, and because onboard shake reduction is a feature I've grown to appreciate greatly in my P&S camera.

The only real drawback of the K100D -- compared to any other DSLR --is it's a bit of a noisy b*gger. The review on dpreview has a downloadable sample, and while it's not going to scare children or cause anyone to wear earplugs, it's certainly not quiet. Stood among a herd of Canons clones at an airshow, I was surprised at just how quiet Canons seem to be in comparison, and there are times when that might be an advantage.

However all DSLRs are a little noisy, so don't get this out of proportion. I may just be overly sensitive after five years or so of silent P&S/bridge camera use.

The K100D is a nice bit of kit, and my only regret is that only a few months after buying mine, I realised I should've bought the K10D instead. :-) (For it's larger buffer and especially its extra pixels, which come in very handy when cropping airshow pictures).

Oh, and I suppose it's worth noting that you're buying onto a system, not just a camera. While there were some great older lenses around for bargain prices until recently, the (relative) popularity of the K100D and K10D have pushed up prices on Ebay, and there seems to be much less Pentax kit around.... no doubt because more old film Pentax owners have finally been tempted to get onboard the digital bus.

I seem to be going on a bit. The point is that if you want easy access to additional kit wherever you go in the future, Canon is probably a safer bet. However if you like to go against the grain a little, a minority camera (with growing popularity thanks to the 100D/10D combination) is nothing to be afraid of.

I hope some of that helps.

Much the same happened with Minolta stuff after Sony bought them & brought out the A100.
