People with vans annoy me.

They could try that all they wanted, but it wouldn't be true.
that is the way they'd proceed though.
it's almost impossible to hit the rear of someone elses vehicle and be blame free...even though the guy was clearly doing something stupid and dangerous.

It's not almost impossible at all - picture scene, you are driving along an NSL 60mph road at 10mph under the speed limit, and somebody pulls right out in front of you 20 yards from where you are.

You are going to hit them in the back and it won't be your fault.

Ditto a guy suddenly veering into the outside lane at less than 5mph.

try it, then see how your insurance company reacts.
there are cases where you can rear end a vehicle and be free from blame, but these are a minority.

It doesn't really matter who was right or wrong. At the end of the day, whatever the insurance companies decide on is what you really care about and they may not decide in your favour, no matter how right you are.

I had a crash a couple of years ago, completely not my fault. There were no witnesses and the police weren't on the scene. I ended up with a CD10, 4 points, £200 fine and a loss of my NCB. There was nothing I could do, I just had to bend over and take it :(

Some guy in road rage cut me up, wacked his fogs on, jammed his brakes on and I went striaght into the back of him.
and they said you should've eased off and took action to maintain a safe braking distance?

sounds about right to me, insurers have took this line for years.
sorry to hear about it btw.

Yeah its stupid, I had no chance but as I went into the back of him its my fault.

When I need a new car I will just travel motorsways at night and cut up some poor victim and claim on the insurance.

The fact the actions nearly killed me as I did a 720 spin at 70mph down the motorway just missing the barrier.

How many cars do you know that can brake from 50mph to 5mph in 20 yards?
approximately the same number of cars that you can list that can appear without warning out of nowhere 20 yards in front of you whilst only travelling at 5mph

You slow down to 30mph on NSL roads every time you see somebody waiting at a junction do you?

i know what you mean mate, this is the way it almost always pans out.
you're at the back, you pay.
i know how you must feel, especially as it sounds the other guy pretty much intended to cause the collision.

no, but i make sure i give them and their movements (or lack of) a lot of my attention, i prepare myself for the possibility that they may have not seen me or they're just going to do something stupid and that i may have to brake.
if they pull out at 5mph as you describe then the minute it appears to me that they are about to put themselves into my path i react appropriately.

they can't just "de-cloak" 60 feet in front of you doing 5mph.

[TW]Fox said:
No, but they can suddenly lunge out of the side road with no prior warning whatsoever.
a road that's so elaborately camoflaged that a vehicle can emerge from the opening at 5mph and be in your path before you've even seen it at all?

now you know where my "almost impossible" comment came from.

Sorry to hear about that moron, Fox.

A few weeks ago in town, I was going through a traffic light controlled T junction, which has two lanes in all directions.
The lights were already green my way but from my right came a white van driver (going through red). I stopped easily and gave a 'shrug/wtf?' (no horn/gesture) as they drove past. The passenger gave a sheepish look but as soon as they went past he leant out and shouted ******.

Odd.

Oh and another one. Again coming through town in 5-6pm rush, blond woman (white escort convertible - you get the idea) pulled out on the mini roundabout RIGHT infront of the car infront of me (driver was to her right). Very close but no contact somehow. The driver gave it some horn and when queuing at the next set of lights, gave them some top notch verbal. Was very entertaining :p
Hairdresser Escort driver then pulls away from lights, in the left lane but decides to go Right :( More hard breaking from the (new) driver in front of me again. Come the next mini roundabout, they again got a **** load of abuse verbally :p

What a wally driver :/

it's worse when you give yourself just enough time to get to work, and are going down the motorway some truck driver comes out on the outside lane and stays level at 40mph with the other truck in the left for about 10 miles

but to be fair and play devils advocate, you've just highlighted the problem above.
you left yourself just enough time for your journey.
to expect that nothing at all will delay you on a journey which, if it went smoothly, would get you to your destination bang on time is a bit on the foolish side don't you think?
