People's prefered in-game chat?

Mumble has the least observable latency. (Requires a server) (Free)
Teamspeak has the most polished client. (Requires a server) (Costs)
Skype. (No server required but needs an account on the service) (Free)
Steam is usually on most gamers PC's. (No server required but needs an account on the service) (Free)
Windows Live Messenger. (Useful as a backup but requires a Hotmail/Xbox live account) (Free)

When I run my own server I use Mumble because it's free. When I play certain games with friends we use a TS3 server that someone in the group rents. Outside of that I use Steam.

I bum vent pretty hard but that's only because it's the one I've used the most. It's just awesomesauce and there's not a single thing that you can do about that fact.

Mumble and TS are alright I guess.

i use vent

does any one remember Roger Wilco? i think it was the gamespy voip. must have been around 2002ish that i used that :P (it was the first voip i used to play games with)

Personally I like Mumble the best, and was going to buy my own server for me and some friends to use for BF3 and LoL sessions, but none of them had heard of Mumble so I went with TS3.

Not that TS3 is bad by any means. I just found Mumble to sound a bit nicer and I prefer the simple look it has tbh.

If it's being used for anything competitive at all surely the only feature that means anything is observable latency?

Seems to me Mumble must be the clear winner then. :)

The thing I love about Mumble is that when someone chats it lowers the sound of anything else in your headphones - game sound, music etc.

Only ever used Skype and Vent so not sure if any of the other programmes do that too.

You can do that with something built into windows 7 and if Skype and Vent are doing it, it's likely to be that rather than mumble
