Peoples views on VSync

My view on vsync is mixed, back when playing x360 2006-07 I do remember seeing tearing but because at the time I didn't know what vsync was an just wanted to play I ignored it and it never really bothered me.

Since moving to PC, learning about vsync etc it now is instantly noticeable everytime it is off or everytime I see it on a mates console and I've never noticed the performance to be affected enough for me to warrant turning it off until Just Cause 2 which for some reason sucked balls at handling vsync. So I'm not sure I'm swaying to turning it off in every other game too, just to get max performance will have to test it out see the benefits/sacrifices.

I can't stand it.

Increased input lag, greatly reduced framerate and, most importantly, discrete switching from 30fps to 60fps is extremely annoying. I'd much rather put up with tearing.

Now if only there were some 120Hz IPS panels around! Hell, I might even consider a 120Hz TN as long as it had a wide gamut.

I tend to use it, especially when trying out a new title. Thankfully, it doesn't tend to bother me in games if I don't have it enabled.

Depends on the game... and the monitor refresh.

I find that if I can get the framerate high enough - even if its well beyond the update rate of the monitor - I can minimize the tearing except on some cutscenes with the camera panning or areas with lots of parallel lines such as radiators and blinds.

For a lot of online games vsync just isn't acceptable for me due to the input latency while I had a 60Hz panel I disabled it in everything. Now that I have a 120Hz panel I tend to turn it on for single player games, eve online and other mmos, etc. but have it very much off for games like quake 3, COD, etc.

I find the quality quite good on the samsung 2233rz with calibration, with the right brightness and sharpness levels, along with the very deep black it does when calibrated right it does a good job of emulating that "CRT" look :D and viewing angle is a little more generous than most. That said if you pull up something with a lot of color blends the dithering is quite noticeable.

Vsync on for me , cant stand tearing its make everything look terrible
If you stand on the spot and turn around with it on things are pretty ok looking
do it with it off and its a mess

Unless the games speed (not framerate) is directly effected I always disable it.

It's a trade off; you either have perfectly smooth framerates and movement with some minor tearing, or much lower framerate, horrendous mouse lag in many cases with no tearing.

I usually don't bother with it - but I have to use it in Crysis because for some reason there is HUGE HUGE HUGE tearing without it. One half of a cloud will be on the right side of the screen, where as one half will be on the left.

JC2 limits it to 30FPS when Vsync is active.

Is that just on ATI because on my 480 it sticks to 60 fps, does dip though, I can only assume those stuck on 30 fps have low performance so vsync limits it to 30 fps.

I get large amounts of tearing sometimes so it goes on then, same as sometimes it really smooths games out for me.

However played l4d2 yesterday and it was enabled (triple buffered) and it gave horrible mouse lag, turned it off and was fine as per usual, though with no tearing

Goes on a game-by-game basis for me

Don't know.
I just know it limits it to 30 FPS for me, same when I tried out 5870 crossfire.

jc2 seems a little strange with vsync on, its almost like it has 2 vsync's... i tend to hang around 80fps on the ground and i soon as i take to the air it then goes up to 120fps im @ 5870CF on a 120hz 2310 so vsync on for me is 120fps,
if i turn vsync off i get more fps when on the ground (90-120fps)
